No multiple translations?

Dear colleagues,

unfortunately, I cannot get MemoQ 5 to allow multiple translations for identical segments. I created a TM allowing this option, but whenever I translate an already translated segment in a different way somewhere else in the text, the older translation is automatically replaced by the newer one. I tried with different TMs, but the result is always the same regardless of which options I chose when I created the TM.

Is this a bug or a feature? And is there any possibility to change this behaviour?

Thanks for any help!

Simple! Dec 14, 2011

In documents that can have different translations for a source segment, you need to disable the Auto-propagation!

I still haven't had a chance to upgrade to 5.0, but I reckon the option should be in a very similar location. While in the grid, go to Translation - Auto-Propagation..., and uncheck the "Allow Auto-propagation" checkbox.

I hope this helps!

Hi Tomás!

Thanks so much. It is indeed the same in MemoQ 5.0, and it solved my problem!

Best regards
Matthias

Allowing multiple translations is usually a bad idea in memoQ Dec 15, 2011

Haven't you ticked 'Use context' when creating your TM? If context is used, memoQ will let you store multiple translations for identical source segments, even if you haven't ticked 'Allow multiple translations'. In fact, Kilgray strongly recommends *not* to tick 'Allow multiple translations' when creating a new TM.

I entirely agree with this!

Multiple translations is a bad idea: when you need to correct some segment, you never know for sure which one you are correcting in the memory.

memoQ will keep different segments depending on the context, which is good, but if you store multiple translations you never get to keep your memory fully up-to-date in terms of maintenance.
