Have you ever been tricked by an agency?
How?
Is there already a list of tricks used by agencies against translators?
Have you the URL?
Can you tell us about ways of tricking word counting, etc?

This is sick.

Addendum:

Who is "us"? What are you planning to do with this information?

Felipe - something for? Sep 8, 2008

Maybe Nicole has something against this posting, maybe not.

I'd be more interested to learn what the reasoning behind your post is. Do you have some particular scam in mind? Is it one agency who you accuse of tricking translators, or are they all crooks?

Dear Felix Sep 8, 2008

I assume/hope you ask this in good faith.

You could start having a look at years of accumulated knowledge in this forum, it takes a little effort to read through the postings but then again, far less than it took to compile it.

It's a free world, indeed. Sep 8, 2008

Which is why Nicole is entitled to speak her mind. As am I. And I agree with her:

Who is "us", and why are you so interested in ways of tricking word counts? After all, every time you get a word count from an agency, it's up to you to check it and decline the job if you feel the count isn't right.

Ok, Im not sure what this question really means so Im just going bluntly ask.

Are you asking whether there is a method to falsify a word count for fincancial gain?
If so, I don't think you're going to find an answer here

Or are you asking whether some agencies somehow falsify word counts to cheat translators and what you can do to protect yourself?

The latter would be a question that someone could understand and maybe answer.

No discussion of specific outsourcers in the forums, please Sep 8, 2008

Felipe,
Have you the URL?

If this refers to specific outsourcers, please bear in mind that the ProZ.com forum rules prohibit discussions of specific outsourcers in the forum.

Regards,
Ralf

I've got a database jam-packed full of tricks, scams, fiddles, creative accounting techniques - you name it, it's in there.

You can have access to it for, um, let me think...... 30 dollars a month?

Maybe he's OK Sep 8, 2008

I guess that there are 2 possibilities:

1) he wants to find out about scams to scam translators

2) he wants to find out about scams to avoid being scammed.

I'm prepared to put my faith in the second option!!

Probably I am very naive.

Stuart

Kill it Sep 8, 2008

I, too, fail to see the point of this thread and what is being asked.

In more than 2000 documented transactions in the past 4 years (since organizing my business in its present form) and God-knows-how-many before that, I have not seen a single instance of an agency cheating, and every legitimate agency I have dealt has paid its bills as well. There have been a few instances of honest miscounts - some too high, some too low - and all of these have been resolved in a manner which was fair to all parties concerned. That's the way grown-ups do business.
