Hello all,
I need to send a bill to Switzerland from Germany for translation services for payment into a German account. For similar bills to EU countries I've added the term e.g. "Ort der Leistung: Spanien; §3a (3) i.v. (4) UStG" to my bills, which exempts me from charging VAT.
Does anyone have experience with sending bills to Switzerland from EU/euro countries? I would appreciate any information you may be able to provide in this matter.
Thanks in advance,
J. MacKerron

US not Switzerland but should be similar Nov 26, 2009

I have no experience with Switzerland but I do with the US, and the relevant fact here is that they are both out of the EU.

When you send an invoice outside the EU it is not subject to VAT of any kind so you don't have to make any mention to it at all.

When you send invoices within the EU they are subject to VAT, so if for any reason they are exempt you have to indicate this on the invoice, which is where the "message" you mention comes in.

So as Switzerland is outside the EU, simply send and invoice with no VAT and no "message".

VAT is irrelevant for Switzerland Nov 26, 2009

No notice is required in this case, just as if you were dealing with Zimbabwe.

so I don't need to make any mention on my bill of either "Ort der Leistung" or MwSt or whatever, and the Finanzamt will not be breathing down my throat?
Cheers,
Jonathan

Nope. Not in this case. The FA has reviewed my Swiss invoices for years and never raised an eyebrow. This is a completely different situation from dealing with clients in EU countries.
