Who decided this? Nov 30, 2009

It would be very interesting to know who decided that these different, unfair terms & conditions, should ever be accepted by translators.

Let's say it was the "free, worldwide translation market".

AFAIAC, I stopped working for a French agency on the day they unilaterally decided to lower my rate, saying in the same breath that the only alternative to keep my previous rate would be to arrange the layout in (mainly .PPT) translated files, to create a client-specific glossary and to hand my TM's over to them - not to mention the "fuzzy match rebates", of course.

One doesn't need to go too far away from home to experience "market pressure".

How generous! Dec 1, 2009

They will allow you to keep your rates, if.... Perfect! I've been approached by several agencies who asked me to lower my rates due to "global financial crisis". I refused them politely. I will only lower my rates if bread, milk, clothes, petrol (etc.) cost less.

If this is true... Jan 4, 2010

native speaker (noun)

Definition: A person who has spent at least one vacation of at least one month in a country where a certain language is spoken. After that period, the person is entitled to call him/herself a native speaker of said language, e.g. in his/her ProZ.com profile.

...then I can declare myself a native Portuguese speaker! I had a one-week vacation in Brazil in 2005 is still fresh in my memory, and I spoke Portuguese every single day on that vacation!

(Not so sure about Spanish, though... I made many short trips to Baja California, which, if added up, would probably amount to a good half a year. But the problem is, no single trip lasted more than 5 days... what a bummer, isn't it?)

I think it's a pity Jan 4, 2010

that we are not allowed to mention agencies in our threads when it comes to insulting rates and other unjustifiable behaviour. Names of (freelance) translators I can understand, but agencies?

Because they are our clients - how professional would it be for us to slag off our clients in public?

surely are not our clients. I don't have one single client who offers me such insulting rates. Is anyone working for clients at a rate of $ 0.02-$ 0.07 per word??
