Hello

I will shortly be going for an interview for a full time translating job with a Paris based agency.

I have never worked with agencies therefore I do not know what is considered to be "usual" .

Hello

I will shortly be going for an interview for a full time translating job with a Paris based agency.

I have never worked with agencies therefore I do not know what is considered to be "usual" .

I've searched through the Forum posts and have read that 1800 - 2000 euro is the average salary for jobs in French agencies....can anyone please confirm ? I imagine this figure is before tax ?

Also, your general comments would be appreciated on whether you think I could negociate more....I specialise in the translation of legal documents (I am an "ex" lawyer with 6 years experience. I am working freelance now and have three clients: a major law firm, an international institution and a government).

I know that I can earn far more as a freelance translator (I have been freelance for a year) but unfortunately the volume of work is very very irregular and I do not see it getting better, unless I find more clients, which I do not particularly want to do.

Finally, can anyone let me know how agencies deal with overtime ? My fear is the agency accepting a very complicated legal document for me to translate with a ridiculous deadline.... What should I negotiate with the agency ?

(They may not take me on of course as they use CAT tools and I have no experience whatever with them, given the nature of the documents I translate !)

Thanks very much for your responses to any or all of the above questions!!!

Claire
