Spanish VAT and VIES

However, I've spoken to Amazon.es on the phone and they assure me that I have to use their Spanish VAT no. ESN1081152I . And, as you point out, it's not accepted on VIES.
Does this not mean that Amazon is VAT registered in Spain?
If you, Emma, are based in Spain, then it's an all Spanish affair (and not an intra-community one). Why do you have to look it up on VIES?

You're quite right, MCristy.
I've just checked with the Spanish Tax Office, and I should indeed use Amazon's spanish tax number and so it shouldn't be entered in our 349 form.
However, Amazon went ahead and discounted the VAT from the invoice they sent me, so now I have to add it to my "earnings" (which seems crazy to me) and then discount it as a purchase that I have made.

I live in ES, and have bought several times from Amazon UK and DE. Before making the purchase, you can putyour valid (=VIES check OK) EU VAT no in your Amazon online account.
Amazon checked my no, said ok and now they dont put the VAT on invoices anymore - reverse charge applies.
And regarding which Amazon no to use: to date, all invoices from Amazon included a valid Amazon VAT no. Number was different for Amazon UK vs DE purchases. DE for example included a BE vat no.
Hope this helps,

The VIES site automatically adds the country code (here ES) to the VAT number, so you have to leave it out when entering the code in the query field. Maybe that is what happened with you and later Emma? Because now, when I enter "N1081152I", VIES tells me that this is a valid number.
