Hi there,
I purchased some books via Amazon.co.uk a few months ago and I've received a letter from AEAT saying that the VAT number I put on my 349 is incorrect.
The number appearing on the invoice is ESN1081152I, but when I look for this in the site http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/vieshome.do it does not come up as valid.
Am I doing something wrong here?
Cheers

Thanks for your help. How did you arrive at that number?

I just googled "Amazon VAT number". The only answers I found were on forums, but checking the number on the VIES website showed it was the right one. Strange it's not on the Amazon website (at least I can't find it!).

As far as I'm aware, there is no VAT on books in the UK.
Whether that makes a difference to the accounting process, I don't know!

you buy them as e-books, on which full VAT is charged (for no good reason that I can understand).

There is no VAT on books delivered to the UK. When I buy books from Amazon UK for delivery to Italy, they add 4% VAT as Italy charges 4% VAT on books. I think that's the same for Spain, where the original poster is based.

VAT is currently levied on ebooks and audiobooks in the UK. The EC raised this issue, saying that print and digital books should normally be subject to equal VAT treatment, albeit at reduced rates because "many member states continuously want to subsidise such consumption for educational/cultural reasons."

I've just checked an Amazon.co.uk invoice and 4% has been applied on a purchase for books. Maybe this isn't applied if you're based in the UK.
The ES VAT number you came up with, Elizabeth, is the Amazon EU lawyers' number for Spain. No wonder it wasn't accepted!

Thanks for your help Emma, Kate, Gilla & Mary. I really appreciate it.
I'm based in Spain so the 4% is applied.

I have never thought about it, because I usually get Amazon to send books to my relatives in the UK. I collect them next time I visit...
The VAT rate for Denmark and Sweden is 25% - plus extra postage... OUCH!

Aren't books in Sweden subject to a lower level of VAT? 6% I think.

You are probably right, Madeleine.
Though VAT in Denmark is 25% on just about everything - and my Swedish relatives commiserate!

Hi Elizabeth,
I'm in a similar situation right now. I registered my VAT no. on the Amazon.es page and so my latest order has been issued without VAT.
However, I've spoken to Amazon.es on the phone and they assure me that I have to use their Spanish VAT no. ESN1081152I . And, as you point out, it's not accepted on VIES.
I asked if I could use the Luxembourg no. because the invoice is issued by Amazon EU S.a.r.L, which is based in Luxembourg, but they say I can't.
Which number did you end up using and did you get any feedback from Hacienda about your 349 form?
Thanks,
Emma | | | |
