Looking for advice on rates calculation for book translation in the US

Greetings everyone,
I have been approached by a US-based publisher as regards the translation of a book and will, of course, have to provide rates.
As this is a first for me, I'm wondering if anyone here would be kind enough to tell me how rates are calculated in the US publishing industry? In Poland, this is normally done on the basis of a publisher's sheet, which, for prose, is 40,000 keystrokes. Does the same thing apply in the US? Or is a different unit applied?
In addition, if anyone would be willing to give me an overall 'feel' for the kind of rates that tend to apply per unit there, as I imagine they differ from our standard per word rates, I would be very grateful.
Thank you in advance!
Caryl

Calculate it according to your normal rates
Jan 13
If I were you, I would calculate the translation in my normal rate (in the UK and in Brazil we normally charge translations per word) for smaller texts and then consider how long you actually think it is going to take you and see if you need to charge a little bit more or a little less.
You should also discuss with the publisher if you are going to have the copyright of your translation or not, which can influence your price.
But anyway, never charge less than what you think your work is worth.
