VAT rules for self-employed person not registered for VAT, invoicing Sweden

Hello,
Just to clarify my situation straight away:
- I am self-employed and resident in the UK
- I am not VAT-registered
- My turnover is less than the threshold of GBP 73000
- I am dealing directly with a customer (not agency) in Sweden, and I do not know if they are VAT-registered there.
I have submitted a regular UK invoice in GBP to the customer in Sweden, who have asked for my VAT number before paying the invoice. I have explained to them that I am not VAT registered, and consequently, this is not a VAT invoice, and VAT is not payable.
I have been scouring the internet for hours looking for a definitive answer, and am finding lots of conflicting information. Some sources seem to state that I need to register for VAT in Sweden (as the country of supply) and pay VAT there, while others say that no VAT registration or payment is required in either the UK or Sweden, and that this should suffice for the company in question.
If anyone could clarify the issue, I would be most grateful!
Richard

Vat reference (for the umpteenth time).

Read through the forums.
You might find a link I've posted a couple of times and you might refer your customers to it:
You export a service to a EU-country.
It it the end-customer who, if you both had a VAT-number would offset VAT-has to pay VAT.
The laws of your country and British threshold with regard to VAT are valid.
So, no you don't need a VAT-number unless you make more than £73.000 turnover/year.
You could mention the reference to the notice on your invoice.
