Dear colleagues

I was offered a weird job offer a couple of days ago. I still don't know if it was serious or it was a mere joke to know my reaction. Someone contacted me via Skype. The profile info lead me to a translation website with a similar slogan to mine: a translation is the translation of ideas, not words. Well, it is good to know that think that!

A chat started, I never knew to whom I was chatting with. Whas that person a girl, a boy? I ignored it. It offered me a very low rate but, they added, the could offer me a free services as a plus: trust and respect, and they will help me to have inner peace!

I quote part of our chat.

THE TRANSLATION AGENCY offers trust and respect as well as understanding to our translators

do you know that THE TRANSLATION AGENCY offers a free service to its translators , helping them not to have a bad state of mind , and if they dont feel good , we help them to have inner peace and serenity ?
... lot of translators are full of passions but they have no inner peace
... if you accept to be a member of our family , we will certainly help you to overcome such an emotion
... we are diffrent , We value our partnership and will be proud to have you as a member of our family of partners.
...usually employer think only about their benefit , isnt true ?
... your happiness is our happiness
------------

I'm sure it is great to have inner peace, I love to be respected and trusted... but, were they serious regarding their offer? Do you think there was some one doing a bad joke to me? Was it an all fool's day?

Regards

Clarisa

Never heard or seen this way of contacting translators.

I wonder how they will help you find your inner peace... Certainly not by offering you a very low rate I think, but that is probably to give themselves more inner peace.

Careful - sounds like Scientology or similar Jan 19

See, for example, http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/11/20/1069027240990.html
"Tom Cruise credits Scientology for the inner peace and serenity he projects in his latest film The Last Samurai.

"Well, it's known I'm a Scientologist, and that helped me to find the inner peace and great stability and tools to help others," Cruise said in a press conference for his latest film."
[bold emphasis mine]

I'd steer well clear of this "agency".

Best regards,

Steffen

No way Jan 19

It's just a way to get you to accept lower rates in return for WHAT? Just look at the poor English and you know this cannot be taken seriously.

Oh dear Jan 19

Just reading their poor English puts me very far from the state of inner peace.

The only peace of mind an agency should offer is:

1. good rates
2. timely payment
3. longterm business relationship

Everything else could be considered "intrusive" and could lead to financial losses such as high (family) membership fees.

Unclear relationship - Stay away Jan 20

Replace "translator" with "plumber" and their message is equally valid. To me, this is not a customer, but something else.

Yes, a plumber should be offered by the great value of inner peace and ask him to do his job! I am sure that they will not dare to do so!! Because this act will be harmful to them. The value of a plumber is much greater than of a translator in this regard. What a pity!

These are they kind of people looking to prey upon translators who have emotional issues.

Doubtless some would be willing to trade large amounts hard cash for a few kind
words.

I don't think you are one of them.

I've had contact with cheapo agencies who shower their translators with praise and promises of prestigious contracts (but not money), and they seem to do quite a business with it.

In the immortal words of Nancy Reagan "Just Say No."

Clarisa, you made my day with this post! thank you! That's the best I've ever heard
P.s. Seriously, I don't think it's wise to chat with someone (especially business-wise) if you don't know who or what it is.

Inner peace Jan 23

I would never consider a low translation rate as a real business offer. But this particular offer really surprised me.

Ewa, the person who contacted me gave me a link to his/her Website. It looked like a real translation agency Website.

Scams... Jan 24

Sometimes, scammers will send you emails and use real agency sites to make their claim more legitimate. Usually they'll try to get as much personal data from you as they can, or even ask you to fill out applications.
On the other hand, they might just be trying to sell you software or services.
I would just try to get information from their IP, look at their nickname, and the name of the person chatting with you. A project manager or recruiter should not have a problem giving you their credentials.
And if it makes you uneasy, just let it go. There is always other business.
