As an absolute beginner in the \'freelance world\' I just want to know how much I can expect to charge for the GE>EN combination, and ES>EN too. I don\'t think that the amount I\'m charging is high enough to pay for one weeks rent never mind a month! Any help would be greatly fully appreciated.

Ciao

Suggestions for pricing May 17, 2002

Hello,

While we really can\'t discuss specific rates here, you can go to individual profiles and see what some of the other translators with your language pairs are charging. Not all list rates, but some do. Keep in mind though that ProZ is very much on the low side; in fact, if you are living in the US, you probably will not be able to live on the rates you will be offered here.

It has become especially bad in recent months. There has been a lot of pricing pressure from countries where the cost of living is much lower. If you search around the forums you will see much evidence of this.

A much more realistic idea of rates can be found by simply using some search engines to find lists of translator/agency websites. Some of them list rates or have an online quote option.

I would also not depend on translation for your sole source of income for at least a few years of freelancing. It takes a while to build up a client base. And even then you can (and probably will) have some lean times, just as you would with any other freelance profession.

Good luck,

Sonya
