How do you guys charge for DTP works?

One of my clients asked me if I could do DTP work. About 30 graphs are included in 40 pages of source material. All of the graphs have letters which needs to be translated to target language.

Normally I would ask the client what is acceptable rate for them, but they don't have any experience in those kind of work either.

I charge by the hour.

How do you decide level of difficulty? That comes with experience. Sorry, I don't know how else to help you.

Editing a bitmap using a graphics editing program like MS Paint(???), Photoshop or Paintshop Pro is one thing.

Putting a document together to prepare it for printing (I mean professionally, not on your desk printer!) is a completely different thing and requires tools like Quark or InDesign.

If an Excel graph is embedded into a Word file, for example, you can simply double-click the graph and edit it inside the document.

That lengthy introduction out of the way, if you don't know the rates, why don't you call a DTP service and ask them and then set a rate based on that?
But DTP work is not just something you get up and do, so be careful.

Normally my translation agency takes care of graphic files, I just had to translate.

However my new client doesn't want to hire either translation agency or DTP agency. The client said "I don't care of the quality of graphics, as far as I can read, it doesn't matter. I will share the document with only a small group of people. I can pay little bit more if you take care of graphics."

I might just use simple MS graphic tools.

I plan to take some graphic courses in a nearby institution. I don't take graphic works lightly, but hope to be able to take care of simple ordinary graphics by myself. ▲ Collapse
