I just passed a trial test from a translation agency in China.

They asked me to send them copy of my ID or passport for the contract.

I asked if I could cover sensitive numbers and they said they need the whole copy.

Is this really necessary? does anyone have similar experience?

Why not join http://www.proz.com/forum/business_issues/314893-send_copy_of_passport_to_agency.html , where it is being debated right now?

data phishing and the agency may be involved in criminal activities; I would not touch them with a barge pole. China obviously has not introduced a strict data protection legislation and transferring to them your sensitive data is dangerous.
