I have never done something like this before and I don't know how much to charge. I am supposed to attend a wedding ceremony at a Register Office and repeat the Registrar's words for the groom. The ceremony will take place in Argentina and the groom is American. I'll have the words beforehand and I'll be able to translate them and have a copy to read. Is this translation or interpretation? or both? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

In memoriam
Both

Obviously both.
Charge per word for the translation and by the hour for the interpreting.
Now if they need you also for the wedding night, that will be at a higher rate.

as they don't need you for the wedding night... sorry, I couldn't resist!
If you go the party after the ceremony, hopefully the drinks and food will be supplied, which would be a plus!

Technically it's only interpretation

Technically it's only interpretation. That's expensive enough as it is
It's like interpreting the reading of a contract you've received in advance. Be glad you can prepare yourself.
Regards, Gerard

Thank you all for the answers and please forgive my typing mistakes. That happens when you are doing too many things (and using more than one language) at the same time! Regards.

I agree with Gerard

It's interpretation, the text is for preparation purposes only. I've interpreted at weddings several times, generally interpretation rates are charged (plus the drive and any other expenses you may have).
Good luck and have fun Lydia

Enjoy it...

I have just attended a friend's wedding in Croatia where an interpreter was used - I'd really just like to say that the interpreter "married" my friend just as much as the registrar did, as most of us there didn't understand a word of Croatian. Both the interpreter's and the registrar's good humour and professionalism made it a wonderful ceremony, so I wish the same for the wedding where you'll be interpreting - enjoy yourself!

Great fun

I did it for a friend's sister. I didn't charge full-blown interpreting rates as it was kind of a favour. Anyway, it was great fun. I was doing Catalan-English. What made it most nerve-racking though was that the South African groom knew no Catalan (they met in England). I was projecting my voice towards the family, then I noticed the groom looking at me and suddenly realised I was translating for him also. When the mayor said "I now pronounce you husband and wife", he stopped me as I went to translate it and put his mayor's sash over my shoulder! So I married them as well
Hope you enjoy it.
I'm also translating for a wedding in Paris. This is free of charge since I'm doing it for a very close friend. It is a Protestant Christian wedding, so I have to translate a sermon as well as the vows. Should be great fun as well, though I hope there are no tear-breaking moments, since because it is a close friend it may affect me as well. ▲ Collapse
