There's currently a job posting on ProZ that reads (excerpt): I need to translate 3500 words from English to Dutch. The materials are: 1) Some HTML pages. 2) One software. 3) Other text files. The maximum budget is 90 Euros. 90 Euros for 3500 words? Surely this cannot be a serious agency?

Either it is a mistake on their part or they live in an isolated corner of Indonesia where people work for peanuts. At any rate, they must know they are in the wrong either way. IMHO that is Hopefully they will come back on to you and say it was a stupid mistake. Make sure the payment terms are not over 30 days too. I now refuse any payment beyond that and fare very well. ... See more Either it is a mistake on their part or they live in an isolated corner of Indonesia where people work for peanuts. why are you surprised? | Feb 28, 2007 |
the price is the result of negotiations between two parties to the contract. Agency tries to find the best rate. Make your counteroffer with a decent rate. Who knows, maybe they will accept your rate. Nothing is carved on stone....

Seriously, I wouldn't dream of quoting to such a job offer. The reason I posted this topic was more: does ProZ allow such offers, if they are clearly preposterous? Shouldn't there be something of a minimum standard for job postings? (Or has this already been discussed to bits...) The most surprising thing is that there are already 5 (five) quoters to this job.

[Subject edited by staff or moderator 2007-02-28 09:04] That rate sounds derisory to me - less than half a normal, modest rate. And surely translation into Dutch should be paid at a better rate than more usual languages such as English, French and Spanish? Try negotiating. Best wishes, Jenny.

Hi Jan Willem, Seriously, I wouldn't dream of quoting to such a job offer. Of course not. The reason I posted this topic was more: does ProZ allow such offers, if they are clearly preposterous? Shouldn't there be something of a minimum standard for job postings? Please see the site's stated policy regarding this issue. (Or has this already been discussed to bits...) Indeed. The most surprising thing is that there are already 5 (five) quoters to this job. Which doesn't mean that they are actually quoting at the price requested. Having said that, this is clearly one for the bin - but that's my decision, not ProZ.com's. Best regards, Ralf

Jan Willem van Dormolen wrote: 90 Euros for 3500 words? Surely this cannot be a serious agency? That's 2,5 eurocents per word. Or, in South African currency, 25c per word. Which compares not too unfavourably to: http://translators.org.za/indexes/tariffs2004.htm But I won't work for that rate, not unless the work is dead easy or darned interesting (and I have no other work).

Yes, maybe its a matter of negotiations, but And if the agency tries to find the best rate - OK. But what about the best quality? Is it realistic to expect at least something decent for 20 per cent from the minimum market rate? I would still understand by 20 per cent lower the minimum market rate (maybe some beginner will take that)...
