When to send the bill to the client.

When is the appropriate time to send a bill for a translation? Should it be sent at the same time as the translated document is submitted? Or should I wait until the document has been checked?
Thank-you for your attention

Your choice, but don't wait too long May 3, 2007

Hi David,

there's recently been a quick poll on this topic.
http://www.proz.com/?sp=polls&poll_id=2476&action=results&sp_mode=past

And the discussion of it:
http://www.proz.com/post/541244#541244

Basically, the choice is yours, but you shouldn't wait too long.

Personally, I try to send the invoice along with the translated document, or the next day. Always within a week after delivery.

There's one exception: sometimes a client announces there'll be a number of small documents to translate over the period of, say, one month. In that case, I add them all up and send the invoice after the last one. (Not for outsourcers I haven't worked with before, though. I need to be sure they do intend to pay...)

Good luck!

Margreet

Confirm receipt by client May 3, 2007

David,

I send the bills after I got confirmation from the clients that they have received the translated materials. So far, it goes fine.

Have a try!

When I deliver the job May 3, 2007

I prepare the invoice before delivering the job and send them both together in the same email. That way, I never overlook an invoice and the terms of payment (30 days, 60 days, etc) become effective immediately. No client has ever criticised this practice as being precipitate, and some positively welcome it because they prepare their own invoices from knowledge of my fees.
