Hi there,
I am at the end of my studies (MSc Translation) and am in the middle of the interview process with a company in France who want to hire a French-English translator.
One of the questions they asked was what salary I expected, but I really have no idea. I am living in Britain, but do not even know what companies here pay.

Well that's a difficult one, inhouse translators generally do not make very much money despite their experience and/ or long studies. In the Netherlands you would be looking at 2300-2400 euro bruto per month (please correct me if I'm wrong).
Now it all depends WHERE you are located, and what the living costs are. In some places with even double the salary, you couldn't affford a 1 piece bedroom, so you're going to have to live in some town far far away, with a 2 hour... See more Hi there,

On the ANPE (French employment agency), the net salary offered in ads for in-house translator is often between 1100 (!!!) and 1800 euros, I would say 1500 euros in average.
That's low comparing to what a freelance translator can earn.
If the agency is in Paris, you have to ask more than that because the cost of living is much more expansive than in the rest of France.

The job is in Lille (northern France), so the living costs won't be as high as in Paris. It is a young company, so they are perhaps not able to pay as much as other companies, but they want to be reasonable so as to retain staff.
As to how much I need to live on ... I have no idea. The problem is that I am currently in Scotland, so have no idea what the cost of living is in Lille.

Thank you in any case. I now have a slightly better idea of salaries. This is helpful as I expect that I will be having to negotiate this if I am offered the position.
So, Juliette, 1500 euros/month, so roughly 18000 per year? Mmm, ok.

I used to work in a company based in Paris, thus I felt I could share my experience with you. Whether in Paris or in province, translator's wages are not as high as in the Netherlands. Speaking netto, I think that you should not expect to be paid more than 1,300-1,500 euros per month at the beginning. I'd advise you to ask for more so you have some room for negotiation afterwards. One last piece of advice: be precise and say that you are talking netto (add 20% to have the brutto) during the negatiation, so as to advise surprises at the end of the first month.
