Would you or have you ever negotiated to be paid in kind for a project?
If so, what goods or services did you or would you like to receive?
I was just curious about this but perhaps it's something we could/should think about if the dollar keeps falling, as is predicted.
You tell me yours, and I'll tell you mine.

I even did one a few years ago for a six-pack of dishwater (labelled 'beer') .

A couple of years ago, I made a job for an American guy. Since there is no paypal in my country, there was no way for the guy to pay me, so we made a deal: He would buy a certain laptop on ebay and send it to me, as payment.
Everything went fine, he got his translation, I got my laptop.

My story is that the performing arts academy my (quite talented) 11-year old daughter attends asked me to translate a book of acting games for them. I'm sure they had no idea of what it would cost when they asked me, so I offered them a deal. I negotiated a lifetime scholarship for my daughter at the academy for whatever courses she wants to take, including professional training (licenciatura).
This was a very good deal for both sides, and well-balanced financially.  ... Do it. Plus in many cases it might be easy to avoid taxes (I didn't say "evade", did I?)

 Well, oops... Yes... As I said, it all depends on what one could wish at the moment the opportunity occurs. Usually, I rather prefer to have money on hand; but I can see payment in kind is a good opportunity to acquiring things you can't usually buy. For example, right now it occurs to me a good all-expenses-paid-vacation. Ten (10) days at least. Not less.
Yesss, that's it.

It only happened to me once, it wasn't for a translation but for an article I wrote for an airline's inflight magazine. I got a return ticket to a destination of my choice. Definitely a good deal, just a pity the airline only offers flights in Europe and not overseas.

I did some translation for my neighbors. Had no intention of charging them, but they send over this delectable container of homemade ice cream.
Must say, I might definitely consider working for that 'fee' again.

I once received a bottle of something not generally available in France, but that was for a translation into my source language so I didn't feel justified in charging money.
But what are the tax implications if you do this a lot? Do you have to estimate the value and declare that? Or are you really allowed to just forget it - easy to do once you've drunk it!
I'd be really interested in finding out - any tax experts out there?

I translated a few articles for a local artist and was given a painting I had been longing for in return - definitely an excellent deal!!
I keep hoping some of the fancy restaurants I translate for offer a meal (with wine!) in one of their establishments...
