...Ok, her er problemet.. Første ordet i andre setning, "Their", referer til Channel Islands siden det er i flertallform. Ordet "point" kan også bety halvøy eller bare "punkt" (tvetydig). Siden teksten handler om geologiske historiske fakta, og øyene "hang sammen" med fastlandet før, kan konteksten ha noe med halvøy å gjøre? (quote: underlying connection between the Islands and the mainland...) Og, hvilke øyer er Alderney synlig ifra? Det kan ikke være Guereny, Herm og Sark, for da må jeg ha blingsa veldig på kartet. Alderney har derrimot flere småøyer rundt seg.

I don't think the English is very clearly written, but I hope I can be of help: in the expression "nearest point", "point" is never going to mean "halvøy"; it simply means "place". Describing Alderney as a "point" is a bit weak, but what all this means is that the Channel Islands' closest point to France will be somewhere on (the south coast of) Alderney. And, importantly, it is not a question of Alderney being visible from elsewhere; it is the *French coast* that is visible from all the islands. As you say, the original text is somewhat "tvetydig".
