Comment by Rev. Dr. Leigh Foster on May 5, 2008 at 8:41am Just to let everyone know, this guy has been stopped and new laws are being set into place for the artists that they are not allowed to use animals in their displays especially if that animal is being torchured or has been torchured and killed for the display. So give yourselves huge pats on the back for making such a wonderful breakthrough. | | | Magda Dziadosz Poland Local time: 13:24 Member (2004) English to Polish + ... So give yourselves huge pats on the back for making such a wonderful breakthrough. Does it mean that until now torturing and killing animals was (is) actually LEGAL? Magda PS: It seems that the full story has more aspects and is much less shocking: http://attivissimo.blogspot.com/2007/11/antibufala-cane-lasciato-morire-per.html

But without mentioning names/countries, you only have to read the papers/watch the news to graphically see where people are actually torturing other people. That really gets to me. In that respect, there are also plenty of petitions to sign. | | | Can this be real? | May 10, 2008 |
A friend forwarded me an email about this which was doing the internet some weeks ago. She knows I'm not easily taken in by unsupported claims and wanted my view on the story. This is my reply to her: "Well if all art loving Nicaraguans visiting the gallery during the exhibition were cold-hearted fascists.... If so there is a possibility. Otherwise, why are there no first hand accounts of this maltreatment? A couple of ... See more A friend forwarded me an email about this which was doing the internet some weeks ago. A couple of interesting discussions: http://harmonicminor.com/2008/04/07/the-guillermo-habacuc-vargas-hoax/ http://www.designfederation.net/news/?p=572" Basically, with no supporting evidence, I find this whole thing rather racist. Like, this is how they treat animals in less developed countries. We the British/European/American etc. are so much higher evolved and are so much kinder to animals... ▲ Collapse | | | Charlotte Blank Germany Local time: 13:24 Czech to German + ... Unfortunately, the lack of animal cruelty laws in Nicaragua means that no charges can be sought for the earlier event. HSI is currently assessing how we can assist the Nicaraguan government in developing such laws." http://hsus.typepad.com/wayne/2008/04/street-dog-art.html "... we should rechannel our anguish and anger about Vargas and direct our energy to combat street dog problems in the developing world. Vargas is probably no more than a struggling artist, and we need not waste our time with further denunciations. But let's focus our energy on fighting the street dog problem and working to develop programs and infrastructure that can bring some relief to these creatures." @ Textclick: Of course you are right - there is too much cruelty in the world both against humans and animals (and plants as well) and I definitely did not want to disesteem this. @ Madeleine: "Otherwise, why are there no first hand accounts of this maltreatment?" This is something I was also quite astonished about. As far as I could see there was nothing in the "established" newspapers but when I found the above I thought that it cannot be altogether wrong. But even if it were, aren't they right in saying that it's important to start *doing* something? ▲ Collapse | | | Nicole Schnell United States Local time: 05:24 English to German + ... Here is some info that relates to animals that are going to be slaughtered anyway: Factory animal rights and violation What rights to freedom do cattle officially have? In 1979 the Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC), an independent advisory organ of the European Committee, determined that animals in cattle farming have a right to the following 5 "freedoms": Freedom from hunger and thirst - by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigour. Freedom from discomfort - by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. Freedom from pain, injury or disease - by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment. Freedom to express normal behavior - by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal's own kind. Freedom from fear and distress - by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering. http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:fj5EuHh-1w0J:www.animalfreedom.org/english/information/5rights.html%20animal%20rights%20usa%20access%20to%20water&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=13&gl=us ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Ever heard of Guillermo Vargas Habacuc?
