How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone by Sasa Stanisic (sorry, I can't put the accents in here, pronounced Sasha Stanishich). It's a gorgeous read- even with my 5 and 3 year olds on my head all week and a TON of work, I managed to read it in a day and a half (books are better than sleep),

I read these in Spanish, but I'm sure you can get them in other languages: Esta historia Seda (originally written in Italian). Enjoy your holidays! Lucía | | | Since your profile says you translate from Spanish... | Jun 6, 2008 |
...I'm sure you can enjoy reading in Spanish, too. Here are my favorites in Spanish: Angeles Mastretta, "Mal de Amores" and "Mujeres de Ojos Grandes" Isabel Allende "Hija de la Fortuna". Both are delicious! Of course you can find a translation, but nothing compares to reading a book in the original language. Enjoy!
Another vote for Bill Bryson! The book I read recently is called "I'm a stranger here myself". Enjoyable, ironic, short chapters.... Equally entertaining is "The Lost continent, travels in small-town America", also by B. Bryson. For more serious stuff: "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck (one of my favourite authors). Wonderful novella.
