I'm a slob, no matter to whom you compare me. The only exceptions are my computer files (extremely tidy) and, back when I was a student, my notebook. My classmates just couldnt understand how the person whose class notes were notorious for obsessive neatness (different pen color for different purposes, underlined titles always with a ruler, etc) and thus photocopied by almost everyone during finals, could be such a slob when it came to housekeeping... I earn more in an hour (much more) as a translator than I could earn as a cleaner, therefore it makes financial sense for me to spend more time translating and employ a cleaner to take care of the house. Furthermore, as I spend all my time translating, that's what I'm good at. I do not specialise in cleaning up after the cats, emptying the dishwasher, doing the ironing, dusting the bookshelves, picking stuff up off the floor and so on - my... Furthermore, as I spend all my time translating, that's what I'm good at. I do not specialise in cleaning up after the cats, emptying the dishwasher, doing the ironing, dusting the bookshelves, picking stuff up off the floor and so on - my cleaner does, and she does it far better than I would. So she comes three times a week and is thus responsible not only for the cleanliness and tidiness of the flat but also - and consequently - the continued good health of my relationship with my partner. So having said all that, is the flat tidy right now? Unfortunately not, the cleaner's on holiday!

We are experiencing a bit of a role reversal here. My husband was a stay-at-home dad and student for several years (and so handled most of the household stuff), but just started a full-time teaching job. My husband was a stay-at-home dad and student for several years (and so handled most of the household stuff), but just started a full-time teaching job. I was always the full-time translator, but now will be responsible for dropping off/picking up kids from school and two days a week will babysit an additional three children after school (for a total of five), plus will have to take care of all of the household stuff that has to be done during working hours, plus grocery shopping + cooking, etc. - oh, and my translation work, too! Husband will have little extra time after school to help, because at first he will have to spend a lot of time planning and grading lessons. I know lots of women juggle this stuff all the time without much help (not to mention single moms), but I've been spoiled and this is new to me! The kicker is that in our relationship, he is the "neat" one and I am the "messy" one. I shudder to think how I will keep up. At least I am starting out with the house in pretty good shape and have already started the dreaded before-school sorting job on the kids' clothes and school stuff. The next order of business is to thoroughly declutter my office so that (like Williamson said) I can work much more efficiently in the more limited working hours I will have. Honestly, I think getting rid of as much "stuff" as possible is the answer.
