OUTREACH ACTION ITEMS
Email PLoS news to your scientific community.
Email fellow scientists and collaborators about the PLoS Biology call for papers and send them a hyperlink for quick access to the PLoS Web site. Also, many exciting
PLoS and open access developments are currently happening. Be sure to check the Web site frequently for specific details. Also, periodic PLoS news updates will
be sent to you. Please forward them to members of your community of researchers.
Add the “I support PLoS” phrase/logo to your
email signature. One of our ingenious advocates gave us this great and easy idea. Automatically include a statement supporting PLoS/PLoS logo in your signature
to outgoing email messages. Each email that you send becomes another opportunity to promote PLoS. Sample phrases can include: “I Support PLoS”, “Submit to PLoS Biology today”, “PLoS promotes open access in
scientific research”, etc.
Send the PLoS video hyperlink to others.
The short PLoS video is a catchy way to promote PLoS. Watch “Wings” on our Web site and share the link with scientists and cinephiles alike
(http://www.plos.org/video.html). We invite you to use and distribute it widely. The short piece humorously provides a glimpse to the scientific progress that could
be made if research and discoveries were openly and freely shared.
Email the Call for Papers document to all the
listserves that serve communities of researchers where you hold membership. Promote PLoS Biology’s Call for Papers, the PLoS video, or any PLoS news in any online chat groups or weblogs.
Add PLoS Web items to your internet media.
Consider adding the PLoS Web banners to your Web site for direct links to the PLoS site. PLoS cartoons and posters can also be added to your Web pages with hyperlinks that direct traffic to the PLoS site.
Post PLoS posters. We'd like to see PLoS posters in every hallway, elevator, bulletin board, and cafeteria of every university and research institution in the world.
Please hang them wherever you can. We encourage you to place these posters not only in the most visible public
areas where scientists may congregate (classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, cafeterias, coffee/break rooms, gyms, etc.), but also in more
creative locations that would provoke the eye and activate the memory. Please hang the most informative, Call for Papers poster in the near vicinity of all other PLoS posters. Email us a digital picture of a PLoS
poster in its location and we will have a contest for the most creative/effective poster placements. Winners receive a PLoS t-shirt and a spot on the PLoS Web site!
Coordinate promotion of PLoS at conferences.
The conference setting is a great platform for PLoS publicity. We suggest utilizing a number of PLoS resources for PLoS outreach to achieve maximum visibility. Place posters, pass out brochures, give a
presentation about open access, play the PLoS video in public areas and sessions (pub, bar, cafeteria, reception,
check-in lobby), display PLoS slides during the beginning and/or end of sessions, hand out PLoS issue subscription forms, pass out PLoS removable tattoos, and proudly wear your PLoS t-shirt.
Print out and photocopy any or all of PLoS
downloadable documents appropriate to your
institution and place them in the mailboxes of fellow colleagues.
