Hello. I have no experience in translating, and I would like to attend a University in Europe to study Spanish to English, and Italian to English translation. However, does anyone know if there is a source on the internet of credible schools? A sort of ranking such as you find for Business and Law schools in America? Thank you.
Sincerely,
Nygil Murrell

Have a look at www.ciuti.org.
Spanish and Italian are B-languages and if I am not mistaken you will have to chose an A-language in combination with B or C.

Degress in Translation Aug 18, 2003

Hi!

Try these URLs:

- Estudios de traducción e interpretación en las universidades españolas y portuguesas (by me: http://traduccion.rediris.es/cdb/traduweb.htm

- Translator-Training Institutions (by Anthony Pym): http://www.ice.urv.es/trans/future/tti/tti.htm

I know there is Universitat Rovira i Virgili offers online and face-to-face graduate courses in technical translation and localization, focusing on Spanish-English:

Here's an EU list Aug 18, 2003

Since your mother language is English, you might try looking up the UK and Ireland first. Some schools in other countries offer translation into English, but the natural tendency would be to offer translation into the language of the country concerned, which may not be that advisable.

There are a lot in Great Britain Aug 19, 2003

I did an MA in translation from Italian to English in Ireland, but the course was scrapped after only a year... however, if I had had enough money in my piggy bank I was very interested in a masters in translation and interpreting at the university of Westminster in London. Admittedly that was 6 or 7 years ago, but I imagine it's still up an running.

Hello. I just wanted to thank everyone for their input. I apologize for not being very responsive, things have been hectic lately. However I appreciate the information, it has given me some good sources for future research.

Translation courses at City University, London Aug 28, 2003

You can take exams at the Institute of Linguists (a professional organisation for translators, interpreters, tutors and people interested in working with languages)every year in January, see www.iol.org.uk, and to prepare for the (postgraduate level) exams you can, for instance, take on a distance learning course with City University, London : http://www.city.ac.uk/languages/dtdl.htm

The Institute of Linguists in London will also give you a list of schools and colleges elsewhere where you can prepare for the exams. Good Luck.

Hi!

The Intercultural Studies Group of the Rovira i Virgili University has a great list of translation schools...

http://www.ice.urv.es/trans/future/tti/tti.htm

I specially recommend the translation masters and postgraduate courses of that university (as an ex-student of the "Masters in Translation and Localization"
