Friends of ours are getting married tomorrow and I'm supposed to write and/or say something, in English.
Even though I'm not really at a loss for words, I'd still appreciate getting some hints in English and/or Croatian.

Something witty, humorous and sincere would suit me nicely.
And no, hardly any of the hints, tips, suggestions thru Google and other search engines work.

Anyone?

You wouldn't happen to have something longer, would you?

ringišpil/vrtuljak Aug 25, 2003

Jedna od mojih:

Brak je kao vrtuljak/ringišpil: jedva èekaš da doðe red na tebe, a kad se popneš - zavrti ti se u glavi.

Or should I tried to translate it. Something like this:

Marriage is like a merry-go-round: you can't wait to get on to it, but once you're up - your head goes in a whirl.

I know it's not what you want, but I'll find something before the music starts.

Cheers!

you asked for more! does that help? Aug 25, 2003

song covered by John Mayall and Santana

The Sensitive Kind
(Music/ Lyrics: J.J. Cale)

Don't take her for granted, she had a hard time
Don't misunderstand her or play with her mind
Treat her so gently, it will pay you in time
You've gotta know she's the sensitive kind

Tell her you love her each and every night
You will discover she will treat you right
If you believe, I know you will find
There ain't nothin'

There ain't nothin' like the sensitive kind

She gets so lonely waitin' for you
You are the only thing to help her through
Don't take her for granted
She has a hard time
You got to know she's the sensitive kind
You got to know she's the sensitive kind

Respect your partner, and don't take him/her for granted -- Treating your sweetheart with respect is likely to get you the same in return. And regularly reminding him how much he/she means to you will enrich your relationship in indescribable ways.

Nice thread, 3 further items Aug 25, 2003

1.
I usually write some version of this German saying I encountered 20 years ago: Ohne Ehe ist der Mensch überall und nirgends zu Hause. (Without marriage you are at home everywhere and nowhere).

2.
Hagamos un trato "Let's make a pact"
uses a play on "count" / "count on me" - the real meaning of marriage vows imho. By Mario Benedetti, on Serrat's "El Sur Tambien Existe."

Hagamos un trato

Cuando sientas tu herida sangrar
cuando sientas tu voz sollozar
cuenta conmigo.
de una canción de Carlos Puebla)

Compañera,
usted sabe
que puede contar conmigo,
no hasta dos ni hasta diez
sino contar conmigo.

Si algunas veces
advierte
que la miro a los ojos,
y una veta de amor
reconoce en los míos,
no alerte sus fusiles
ni piense que deliro;
a pesar de la veta,
o tal vez porque existe,
usted puede contar
conmigo.

Si otras veces
me encuentra
huraño sin motivo,
no piense que es flojera
igual puede contar conmigo.

Pero hagamos un trato:
yo quisiera contar con usted,
es tan lindo
saber que usted existe,
uno se siente vivo;
y cuando digo esto
quiero decir contar
aunque sea hasta dos,
aunque sea hasta cinco.

No ya para que acuda
presurosa en mi auxilio,
sino para saber
a ciencia cierta
que usted sabe que puede
contar conmigo.

3.
Back in a sec
((Sorry, couldn't find what I was looking for. Have a lovely time at the wedding))

Sorry, I can't help with Croatian
and this may be too late already what with the transatlantic time difference, but here is a web site that may be useful...
