Off topic: Off-topic to the brink of madness... and beyond!! Thread poster: Yamato (X)

A weird idea just came to my mind... In the "off-topic forum" there are some threads that are off-topic (the majority) and some that are not off-topic... eeehm... Which is the criteria? In other forums it is clear what to consider on- and what to consider off-topic, but in the "off-topic" forum? This can sound like a joke, but it might give way to a really deep philosophical analysis (si, venga ya)

Hi Pablo, Of course you are right, an off-topic thread in the off-topic forum should be directly related to translation. I'm sorry Claudia Q

The poster chooses | Aug 30, 2003 |
Usually I don't change the option chosen by the poster. In theory the forum is for off topic subjects, so classifying them in on topic and off topic is nonsense. The reason is just that we have the same buttons and options that exist for the other forums. Sorry for giving a serious answer to a funny question.

This paradoxical thread is likely to twist your mind: you stare at you from the mirror but there is nothing behind! It is too hard for my logic, I will try to explain in verses: most parts of life are off topic in the on-topic universes But in this kingdom of Claudia to this logic pay attention: on-topic for other matters and off-topic for translation. You know what, Pablo | Aug 30, 2003 |
Now we can choose not to see the off-topic topics for all the forums. If you select that option (I don't remember where it is), you'll only see those not marked off-topic. But before that option existed it was necessary to mark off-topic the off-topic topics if you wanted them to appear in the Home page. Luckily that period didn't last too long. And when somebody wanted to share a piece of news about socker, or travels or jokes...there was always somebody ready to say "this is not related to translation" or something like that. I think we really enjoy its existence now. Pablo Cañamares wrote:This can sound like a joke, but it might give way to a really deep philosophical analysis (si, venga ya) ▲ Collapse

Claudia Iglesias wrote: And before that, the Off-Topic forum was invisible, but that's a long story (because it did last too long). The invisible forum There was a time when the off-topic forum Was just an urban legend in Proz, When you knew someone who heard of someone who was once told where such forum was. And yet to find it was rather easy, in retrospect, it was plain to see: You has to answer a Greek–to-Zulu question in Kudoz, get one agree, and have an even number of Brownies, and have at least an “x” in your name! So my friend Claudia was sad and lonely, She gave a party and nobody came Enrique

No-one knows now What’s you’re meaning. Are you on or off or somewhere-in-betweening? Off the topic Of “Off Topic” Seems a little Bit myopic. Surely every- Thing is off there? If it isn’t, then we’d better change the software. We know now Where we can find it. We’ve learned how And we don’t mind it But it’s sad, In fact it’s just too bad To look there now and find It in this sadly split state of mind. All this verse from Me and Quique – I suppose it’s Rather cheeky. But it’s better Than despairing. At least you know that some of us are caring.

THanks Claudia for sharing good memories that are not available to younger members. You see, my question was an attempt to elicit unexpected answer, and sure it did, but also fascinating As a friend of mine told me once: No es lo uno ni lo otro, sino todo lo contrario (It is not this nor that, it's all the contrary)

One of ProZ best features is the ability to invoque a magic character known in our level of conscience as Jack Doughty (I suspect he has different manifestations to elves, fairies and rabbits), who can produce a handful of poetry, of laughter or both with a touch of his wand. Some people think translating poetry is impossible. Well, they don’t know our Jack Nice to read you, old friend! Q...
