We will rock you Jul 7, 2009

When I went to the "Dominion theatre" to see "We will rock you" and one of the performers asks "Do you want the hear the "Bohemian Rhapsody" the entire public veered up as if "God save the queen" was sung. BR has been the number one song on many charts for years.
Others by queen: We are the champions, Radio Gaga, Who wants to live forever, friends will be friends,......

Nazareth: Love hurts.
Meatloaf: " Paradise by the dashboard light" and the duet in "Anything for love".
Guantanamera- Clavelitos (reminds me why I learnt Spanish)
Con te partiró (Bocelli and Sarah Brightman).
Ochi chorne (black eyes-Russian gypsy song).
Fields of gold by I muvrini and Sting
Dans le port d'Amsterdam (J.Brel).
Les lacs de connemara (Michel Sardou)
Daar gaat ze/there she goes (Clouseau) because of its typical sound.
and many others.

Some more, many Italians but not only Jul 7, 2009

Some more suggestions. Probably the overall rhythm of this selection is a bit slow, but I consider some of them the best songs ever. Some Italian ones are not at all known worldwide, but this could be a good start.

> Zucchero (Sugar) Fornaciari - Diamante (lyrics by Francesco De Gregori)

> Zucchero (Sugar) Fornaciari - Senza una Donna

> Antonello Venditti - Roma Capoccia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?hl=it&v=btnT4eb3SQ8

> Ennio Morricone (sung by Dulce Pontes) - A brisa do coraçao (from Pereira Declares)

> Ennio Morricone (sung by Joan Baez) - Here's to you (from Sacco e Vanzetti)
http://www.torremaggiore.com/saccoevanzetti/intro.html

> Ennio Morricone - The Mission (the whole record)

> Glen Miller - Pennsylvania 6-5000

> Edoardo Bennato - L'Isola che non c'è
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO-FqmTvGyo

> Aretha Franklin - (You make me feel like) A natural woman
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iob8yUsBF1Y

> Pino Daniele - Anna Verrà

> Tom Waits - The heart of Saturday Night

> John Denver (with Placido Domingo) - Perhaps love

> Van Morrison - Have I told you lately that I love you?

> Paolo Conte - Aguaplano
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=voPOQ3R2Rvo&feature=related

> Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge over troubled water
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYKJuDxYr3I

> Pierangelo Bertoli - Eppure Soffia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCyPx5PPVNs

> Pierangelo Bertoli + Tazenda - Spunta la luna dal Monte
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPj1s0idlhI&feature=related

> Pierangelo Bertoli - Per dirti t'amo

> Pierangelo Bertoli - Rosso Colore

Francesca

P.S. To fully enjoy some of them, it would even be worthwhile learning some Italian, or having the lyrics translated (specially Bertoli, Bennato and "Diamante")

A new addition - Chega! Sep 13, 2010

I have just come across this song, definitely one of the best songs I have seen, with a great message. As the song is in Portuguese I shall be supplying an English translation. The song was recorded by Sílvio Brito and had faded into oblivion but was recently revived when a candidate for São Paulo State Government said it inspired him to fight for the poor and needy. Quite a message in these war-stricken and corruption-swept times.

CHEGA!

Repeat (*)

Chega! - English Translation Sep 13, 2010

As promised, a translation of the song into English.

ENOUGH! (Sílvio Brito)

I would like to be the strongest and most powerful man on Earth,
To stamp out violence, hatred and all wars
I wanted to be the richest man, if only for a few seconds
To quench all thirst and wipe out all hunger that still exists in the world
As a child, I dreamt I was a superhero,
I liked to play sheriff and cowboy,
And arrest not only in huts, but also in the palace cellars
The real thieves!
I wanted to one day be the President of the UN, of OPEC or of any nation,
And with my fist on the table issue a stern order,
No more corruption!

(*) I've had enough of remaining silent, seeing everything wrong and just saying yes!
May it be as God wishes, but I can't believe that God wants things like this!
I've had enough of doing nothing, of being conned, of feeling sorry for myself
May it be as God wishes, but it's not possible that God wants things like this
I've had enough of remaining silent, enough of doing nothing
Whenever silence reigns, evil speaks and unkindliness spreads

As a child I wanted to be a more competent doctor
To finally find a cure for the ills of the people, of body and mind
I wanted to be an artist with more space on the media
And only show the good, positive and beautiful things in life
I wanted to be a lawyer but only for the innocent, for the needy, or maybe a judge
To fight for justice and truth, out of the courage of a country much happier and much more beautiful
As I child I dreamt of a world without wrath, without evil or any kind of prejudice
But a world of peace only depends on us
As it is born of love, and only inside each of us

Repeat (*)

1600 Italian songs Sep 26, 2011

I have just heard about a site with 1,600 Italian songs up to 1973. Plenty of choice here, with classic names such as Gianni Morandi, Peppino de Capri, Gigliolla Cinquetti and the like. The site is in Portuguese but comprehensible to most I would think. "Intérprete" means singer and "Título" means the (song) title. Click on a song and you have the Italian (on the left) and a Portuguese translation (on the right), together with a rendition of the song.

Sono un ragazzo più romantico e me piaci molto ascoltare le musiche italiane!

All you need now is some "gnocchi ai quattro formaggi" and "vino italiano" to feel as if you're in the heart of Italy!

The site is: http://www.italiasempre.com/verpor/mp32.htm

For some of the best songs ever, look south to Argentina, Atahualpa Yupanqui, in a style radically different from the mainstream, with a poetical description of the native Indians' difficult life.
