The list of my classical and jazz favorites would be too long, so here's just a few of the best:
Bach's Adagio from BWV564 (especially Albert Schweitzer's performance)
Bach's Cantata #208 on organ is one of the profoundest pieces of music I can imagine.
Pink Martini - Taya Tan
Tord Gustavsen Trio - Deep As Love

Try to include something from this great (now retired) Greek singer. She sings in several languages as well as her native Greek. You can listen to her final concert on YouTube by entering "Nana Mouskouri Farewell to the Stage".
This is just one song from that concert, which she sings with her great and unique voice, gracing the world with her music. No translation available, maybe someone working with EN/GR can supply it? (Lyrics transliterated into the Roman alphabet). In the recording the second verse (Ti ehi'o ftohos...) is omitted.

Dusty Springfield - Son of a preacher man; I just don't know what to do with myself;
Ann Peebles - I can't stand the rain;
Ernie K. Doe - Here come the girls;
Ray Charles - Hit the road Jack!;
Frank Sinatra - It was a very good year;
Otis Redding - Sitting on the dock of the bay;
Marvin Gaye - Heard it through the grapevine; Sexual healing;
The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner - virtually everything!
Steve Miller Band - The joker;
The Kinks - You really got me; Lola;
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah; Suzanne;
David Bowie - Starman; Ziggy Stardust; Ashes to ashes
Talking Heads - Burning down the house; And she was; Road to nowhere;
R.E.M. - Everybody hurts; Man on the moon; Crush with eyeliner;
The Cure - Caterpillar; Boys don't cry, just to mention a few.
I also love Russian folk music. Just listen to Pelagea, a wonderful female voice: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ8UraZS5mE&feature=related
and Leonid Kharitonov, a powerful male voice, with the Red Army Choir: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88gLWwq5G5M&feature=related - finally, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq6SwCETltc this is the lullaby I used to sing to my baby daughter. I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do. | | | | | | |

Three of the most beautiful songs written in my lifetime:
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Trouble Water (already mentioned above)
Billy Joel - And So It Goes
Beach Boys - God Only Knows
Another Billy Joel favorite of mine (not "beautiful," but amazingly personal) - Shameless
Great thread! I'm compiling a list. We're over 600 now--but I have to make a list of just songs, and put it into alphabetical order, then make a separate list for the albums or artists who've been named without mentioning a specific song.
Do all translators love to make and format lists and tables?

A friend of mine has just posted this fabulous duet on a social networking site. I had heard this song with other singers but never imagined that Rod Stewart had produced this gem together with a new budding star, Amy Belle! Sit back and enjoy! To cap it all, the magnificant saxophone, the audience participation and the general setting.
