Dear Prozians As you may know, yesterday morning a huge earthquake struck a very ancient city of Iran called Bam leaving behind thousands of casualties. As an Iranian, I want to thank all countries that have helped us during this short period of time and ask for support of the international community. Peace to you all. It is tragic to learn that thousands of people have lost their lives in a devastating earthquake in Iran yesterday. Unfortunately, we are still unable to foresee the earthquakes and thus destined to suffer at the hands of nature. I offer my sincere condolences to the bereaved families. | | | Csaba Ban Hungary Local time: 21:25 Member (2002) English to Hungarian + ... sweet memories of Bam | Dec 27, 2003 |
I was deeply shocked when I first heard the news yesterday, and as death toll figure estimates are creeping higher today. I spent two wonderful days in Bam 4 years ago... talking to very friendly and kind people in the orange groves that you could find in the courtyard of every house there. Also, the citadel, a UNESCO world heritage site, is now completely flattened. I will never forget the kindness of people in the citadel cafe, offering delicious date cakes. (Date is... to see so many people die from this catastrophe. The destruction of this ancient monument, not only of Iranian or Islamic culture, but of human culture as such, makes the whole tragedy even more sad. Being aware of how much Eastern people honour their traditions and history, and, even more their family (as to my experience, much stronger than we in Europe), I feel with you these days. Dear Csaba, You wouldn't beleive whats going on here right now. I live in Tehran ( capital city of Iran ) some 1000 kilometers far aways from Bam but people are standing hours under the heavy snow in lines to donate blood, money and supplies. Many companies and factories are sending aid teams and supplies, Can't stop remembering the situation we had back in the 80's and the war with Iraq.... Hope you could visit Iran again again, I'll be happy to welcome yo... See more Dear Csaba, You wouldn't beleive whats going on here right now. Dear Steffen, Last week, I spent a few days in Germany (Aachen and Koln) which was very nice but I really can not stay abroad for too long. I missed my family and town so much I was actually running back ! Anyhow, that's how anybody would feel about his homeland I suppose. It's not important which country goes through such tragedies, people should stick together and support each other and only that will remain in the memories... Thank you for ... Deep sadness. Again | Dec 27, 2003 |
No words can be added to what others have expressed. Last night, with my family, we talked about this tragedy and others before it that befell Iran. Sadness also because the same earthquake magnitude in Japan would barely spill coffee from a cup. Other cities and villages are sitting on the same faultline. Let's hope that what is needed to be done will be started soon, so people and historical treasures in future years can be saved.
