www.quinion.com/words/

Dear Translators,

This website can occupy us for the next 10 years at least. It contains 1400 pages (approximately). All of them were written by the same scolar, Michael Quinion, who wrote a third of the entries for the Oxford Dictionary of New Words and provided citation and advice for the Oxford English Dictionary.

The site deals with English words and phrases: what do they mean, their origins, how have they evolved and the ways in which people misuse them sometimes.

A search engine helps finding words and terms in the whole site. There is also a Questions and Answers Section, where words and expressions appear in an alphabetical order. Mr. Quinion answers questions asked by site subscribers and by visitors as well.

Thanks so much Jan 13, 2004

I, too, am very grateful for your sharing this gem with us! Though I should probably scold you instead, since you are totally right : this site will keep us occupied for the next several decades, which means we shall all starve to death!

If I were a moderator, I would certainly move this thread from this topic. This is absolutely related to languages.

Thanks again,
Ildiko

Brilliant! Jan 19, 2004

I'm hooked. This is even more delightful than Anu Garg's AWAD (A Word A Day), which I have been following for years. Thanks Pnina!
