When I'm Sixty-Four

When I get older losing my hair,
Many years from now.
Will you still be sending me a valentine
Birthday greetings bottle of wine.

If I'd been out till quarter to three
Would you lock the door,
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

You'll be older too,
And it you say the word,
I could stay with you.

I could be handy, mending a fuse
When your lights have gone.
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings go for a ride,

Doing the garden, digging the weeds,
Who could ask for more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

Every summer we can rent a cottage,
In the Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera Chuck & Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line,
Stating point of view
Indicate precisely what you mean to say
Yours sincerely, wasting away

Give me your answer, fill in a form
Mine for evermore
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
When I'm sixty-four.

Thanks to our Aurora, who posted John's B-day remainder in the Spanish forum.
I just wanted to share this with a wider audience.
I loved the Beatles. I still do.

Thanks for the reminder... Oct 9, 2004

John Lennon was truly one of the 20th century's greatest song writers. Immediately after reading your post, I started my John Lennon playlist on the computer.

Though, When I'm Sixty Four was one of Paul McCartney's contributions. My favourite Lennon songs are: Across the Universe, Girl, In My Life, Cry Baby Cry (from the Beatles era) and Mother, Love, Working Class Hero and Cold Turkey (from his solo career).

Think of the songs we're missing because of a crazed fan...

You may say I'm a dreamer... Oct 9, 2004

Thanks Enrique and Aurora for reminding me

some things never go out of style

Imagine there's no heaven,
It's easy if you try,
No hell below us,
Above us only sky,
Imagine all the people
living for today...

Imagine there's no countries,
It isn't hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...

Imagine no possessions,
I wonder if you can,
No need for greed or hunger,
A brotherhood of man,
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...

You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one.

My favorite Beatle Oct 9, 2004

I was one of the only ones in my fifth grade class to love John. All of the other 10 year olds loved Paul after that first unbelievable Ed Sullivan show.

Later, just as unexpectedly as the first time that I saw him on TV, I saw him in a black jaquar on the NY state thruway between Rochester and Syracuse. It must have been in 1976 because I didn't have children yet, and Yoko was driving when they passed me and my mother on a stretch of highway with only the two of our cars. What a thrill to have seen John on the passenger side as they whipped by us (speeding)and saying, Oh my gosh, I think that was John!!! John Lennon, Mom! and then we saw the license plate to confirm the event..."Ono1"

One of my sons loves the Beatles too, and we have a great time listening together. I love John and I always will.

Sarcasm? Oct 10, 2004

Wasn't that song intended to mock the elderly? Lennon was a young rebellious fellow who was "anti-establishment". One of the slogans of the day was, "don't trust anyone over 30". Lennon was pretty clear that he espoused that view.
As Roger Daltry of The Who squawked, "I hope I die before I get old". I think Lennon, at least on the surface, agreed with this. Alas, he got what he wanted.

Just fueling the fire.
