Translators assist in time of need
The recent earthquake and subsequent tidal waves across Asia, which left more than 150,000 dead and five million people without the essentials for survival, is a reminder of the need for translation providers in humanitarian crises.
Translators Without Borders (TWB), an association founded 12 years ago in France, regularly provides translations free of charge or at cost price to nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and respected charities such as Médecins Sans Frontières and Médecins du Monde. Dedicated TWB translators handle around two million words each year. This week TWB has translated Handicap International's guidelines for aid workers in the field on what to do in the event of further earthquakes and press releases on the medical and logistical aid being provided by Médecins du Monde.
Translation providers who want to help should go to their country's news websites to see which NGOs are involved in relief operations, contact them and offer their translation services. Any money saved by an NGO or charity can then be used to help those people who are really in need.

I personally donated already money to UNICEF. Other organizations I really like and think the funds will be used wisely are: the International Red Cross, Aerzte ohne Grenzen (doctors without frontiers), THW. How about getting in contact with the EU or the United Nations?

I have made my donation through the UNICEF website with my credi card. It was really easy, a couple of clicks and five minutes time.

What is DEDUNU or ARC-EN-CIEL?
Let’s quote from their website:
“Dedunu or Rainbow or ARC-EN-CIEL is an association established on January 19, 1990, and began with the creation of a crèche for infants from the age of 03 months to 03 years. The primary objective was to provide the opportunity for mothers, especially single mothers, to be gainfully employed during the day, whilst their infant child is cared for at DEDUNU.
In 2003, after 13 years of establishment, it has grown to a full-fledged social service organisation with:
· A Crèche and Day Care Service with a capacity of tending 50/40 infants under 3 years of age.
· A Pre-School with a capacity of 50 children in the age group of 3 to 5.
· An After-School Care Service for children from the ages of 6 to 12.
· And other varied programmes providing Nutritional, Medical, Sanitary and Educational Care for these poor and needy children, and Counselling, Career Guidance and Awareness Raising Programmes for their parents.
Dedunu was recognised for its services to the community by the Ministry of Social Services of the Government of Sri Lanka with the Registration No L27801, (under act No.31 of 1980 amended by act No.8 f 1998) on 11 July 2001.
At present, Dedunu provides for over 30 children from 3 months to 3 years at the Crèche and Day Care, 40 children at the Pre-School and 14 children at the After-School Care Services. Furthermore, 25 children from all these groups are tended for on Saturdays.
Besides providing a healthy and joyful environment conducive for growth, it provides the children with food, clothing, toys, books, stationary, vitamins, medicine, and so on for the children. Dedunu staff, visits each and every home providing consultation / counselling and assistance for parents in facing numerous life situations. Dedunu’s single mother project provides a forum for single mothers to air their grievances and to help each other”.

Anton and Yvonne wrote me today that that they just returned last night after a mission with destitute refugees camped at a Christian Seminary down South.
Their objective is to address the needs of children - infants / children (01 month to 5/7 years).
They don't have big expectations.
Anything that is given with affection is most welcome.
One assurance that they can give you is that every cent received would certainly reach the destitute Tsunami Victims.

I have made my contribution via the Red Cross and a donation to a bank account in Greece. Greece has made significant efforts just to help these people (fund raising, food and drugs, concerts for fund raising, public auctions of valuable items, etc).
Greeks raised about 20.000.000 euros and they keep on... Don't forget that Greece is a small country but Greeks are large-hearted, magnanimous...
