Hi all,

The "Romeria del Rocio" starts next week,
I enclose some information on Europe's most important annual religious pilgrimage.

Huelva Province -EL ROCÍO 2005. 14, 15 y 16 de Mayo.- "Romeria del Rocio".

Located 48 kms. from Huelva.
One of the most important annual religious assemblies in Spain, colorful and full of piety. Pentecost pilgrimage from all western Andalucia and 33 affiliated fraternities from Sevilla, Huelva, Cadiz and Madrid, to sanctuary of Santisima Virgen del Rocio, Patron of Almonte.

This is not just a religious festival: the Rocieros also come here to party. Dressed in traditional costume, this is an opportunity to show off their horses and horsemanship, to call on friends, to dance flamenco, to eat, drink and be merry.

This festival is little known outside Spain yet it is the country's biggest pilgrimage (romeria) in which over a million people make their way on foot and on horseback to the shrine of 'La Virgen del Rocio' which lies on the edge of the Doñana national park in the province of Huelva.

New techonology meets age old tradition in this year's famous pilgrimage - La Romeria de la Virgen de El Rocio. The Civil Guard will making its own kind of pilgrimage with 4,600 on duty watching the revellers as they make their way to Ayamonte, but this year they will be able to know exactly where each brotherhood is, thanks to new GPS technology. In addition many cameras are being installed on the route and will also be used from helicopters. More than a million pilgrims are expected to attend the event, and over the last three years the Civil Guard was needed to act on more than 50,000 occasions. 104 brotherhoods will take part this year, with some 3,000 decorated carts and more than 8,000 people making the pilgrimage on horseback.
