I wonder what you people usually keep on your desktop whilst working (excluding monitor, keyboard and mouse, of course). So let's take a desktop snapshot. Mine looks like a battlefield, and at the moment I got:

a) TV remote
b) Ashtray
c) Pack of cigs (don't bother asking me to quit. I won't)
d) Mobile phone
e) Printer
f) A ruler (dunno why, but it's been there for ages)
g) A 1/2 litre bottle of mineral water
h) A sheet holder
i) A lam

My desk is very small... Feb 24, 2006

... so besides the computer (and accesories), I only have:
-a mug with pens and pencils (...and a ruler...)
-a document holder
-a block for notes
-my coffee mug

I have to have a tidy desk, otherwise I cannot work on it!

I would like to be tidy but... Feb 24, 2006

Somehow I am not very successful. I am on my second cup of coffee but the first one is still here (half full). Apart from one week worth of mail (opened, spread all over the table) and usual CDs, storage boxes, notes etc., I also have toys and for some reason a beach spade (the bucket is under the table) - courtesy of my kids.

Cheers,
Ines

Despite a recent desk clear-up.... Feb 24, 2006

Apart from my computer, dictionaries etc I still have the following on my desk, most of which shouldn't really be there:

A stapler, holepunch and post-it notes
Various photos which do nothing more than clutter things up
My new car tax disk
A hairbrush and small mirror (no idea, I don't tend to get dolled up for work at home)
A birthday card (my birthday was almost 2 months ago)
A calculator
A spare button for my new coat
A 3-tiered in-tray (

Several pens that no longer work but which I never throw out
A cup of tea

Such an organised desk!

Since you insist ;) Feb 24, 2006

I have a big desk, which has three levels.

The main level, where I put my computer screen I see:

5 paper dictionaries
2 Notebooks
My planner
A home phone set
A headphone
A cell
A palm
6 visible pens
An Albanian Yellow Pages Book
2 round CD holders, one almost full, the other half full with CDs

The upper level has 6 little compartments; two of them are closed with glass doors. On the other four I see:

1 compartment with my tax docs (W-2 Forms) that I am collecting (this stuff will be there until I decide to do the taxes for this year. The deadline is April 15)
1 compartment has my sunglasses and a camera
1 compartment has CDs on it
1 compartment has a ruler and a bag of bubble gum candies, which I took away from my 7-year old just the other day.

The lower level has drawers and they have pens, paper clips, highlighters, superglue, tape, stamps, envelopes, cartridges, paper (both white and colored.)

I forgot, on the top of my desktop my husband has put three modems (I believe), one surge protector and a can of Dust-Off. This is his stuff; I cannot even reach that high (unless I use a chair)

That' all I think,

Monika

That's all!
I used to have a lot of stuffed toys, but I took them away to make room for the cat.
Nice topic, by the way

I have to show the thread to my wife :) Feb 24, 2006

She always states that my workplace is a total mess. Now, reading other postings, I feel it's relatively tidy.

1) a LOT of CDs, both in boxes and out of them. In piles, all around. Mostly my son's computer games. Now I remember I was going to talk with the guy about not dropping his stuff on my desk...

2) Usual phone and my cell phone.

6) My son's `notebook' - I don't know why it's here and I dare not to look inside. ... (1 minute passed) The notebook is already in his own room, along with a couple of CDs.

7) Several books: a pocket-size atlas of the world, an English-Russian Historical dictionary, a book of Arturo Perez-Reverte (I will continue reading it... well, when I have a spare time...).

8) Arrghh... My son's watches. Being parents we force him to control the time he spends playing computer games. 30 minutes and not a minute more! And don't tell us you haven't reach the next savegame point yet!

And, the last but not least, a glass of beer. It's Friday evening now!

Have a great evening and weekend, everybody!

Gianni, thank you for the great topic

PS. Another thing added while I was writing the posting. My cat is trying to accomodate himself over the pile of CDs.

Arturo Perez-Reverte? Me too! Feb 24, 2006

One of the two novels I said I have on my desk is "The Seville Communion" (in Spanish "La piel del tambor", I have the Romanian translation).
What's yours?

I wish my desk is bigger! Feb 24, 2006

Here it is:
- laptop, mouse, lamp, fax & telephone;
- two mugs with pens, pencils (ruler, of course );
- last year's book calendar (? ah, ok, some important addresses are there);
- this year's book calendar (huuuge!);
- a box with "very important papers" which I pretend never existed;
- calculator, my glasses, 3 lighters (mostly empty);

- ashtray - but no cigarets! In attempt to smoke less, I keep'em in the kitchen;
- pile of unidentified papers - probably bills and old printouts;
- second pile of unidentified papers - looks like materials given to me for interpreting assignment;
- third pile of papers - these are important, though!
- a list of files from the project I'm currently working on;
- Rudolph the Raindeer and his baby son;
- half-full coffee mug and empty wine glass.

Glad you didn't ask what's in my desk drawers!

Magda
