Hello everyone and a Happy (and prosperous) New Year.

I am translating a literary book on India and I do not know how to transcribe an Indian name into Greek - I checked into encyclopaedias etc. So, could someone, perhaps an Indian translator, help me with this? The name is Bhindranwale - the leader of the Sikh militants in Amritsar. My questions are whether the final -e- is pronounced, whether the -w- is pronounced as -v- or as -u-, and where the stress falls.
Thanks in advan

Happy New Year! Jan 4, 2007

Evangelia,

From a translation of a book on Sikh history (Fighting for Faith and Nation) and the Sacred Japji I did a few years back for a Sikh friend, I was told it is pronounced as a "ou" ("Μπιντραουαλέ").

However, I would wait for the confirmation of a Hindu colleague.

In "Bhindranwale"

w is pronounced as "v"

the final "e" is not silent. It is pronounced as the country name Male is pronounced or stressed

Bhindraan-waalay. Jan 4, 2007

Hi Evengilia,

You may attempt the pronounciation in two steps like this:

First: Bhindraan

Second: waalay

And, then combine them in one word as Bhindraanwaalay.

I hope, it is clear now.

Regards,

Pundora
