We had a recent poll regarding our background music for working.
I have lots of great MPB, Samba, Forró, Pagode, Sertaneja, etc., for when I am working in Portuguese,
tons of great Vallenatos, Salsa, Merengue, Bachatas and Mariachis when working in Spanish....
But have almost NOTHING for when I am working in French (outside of a few songs by brilliant Canadian artist, Bruce Cockburn, and a few tunes by U2 producer, Daniel Lanois).

So....any recommendations?

I like folk, bluegrass, the Grateful Dead, baroque music, medeival, and various alternative music (nothing too abrasive while working, however) including ambient and techno, in addition to all of the great music listed above.

All kinds of French music! Jan 7, 2007

How about some Piaf or Patachou? Or Georges Brassens? Or some Cajun or Zydeco?

Good luck!

Muito Obrigado, Amy, pela sua atenção,

Would you be interested in describing any of these artists in greater detail, or directing me to where (online) I might sample and/or acquire their works?

I am familiar with cajun/sydeco music...I´m not aware of any particular artists, however, that record in French. It is not a genre with which I am very familiar. I do remember listening to Doug Kershew with my dad, as a child.
Good stuff, but all in English, if I remember correctly.

Atenciosamente,
Tony

French music Jan 7, 2007

How about Swiss prodigy and my personal favourite Stephan Eicher? Begin with Hotels The best of Stephan Eicher (see www.stephaneicher.com to see his full discography), French chanteuses Linda Lemay (see "Les secrets des oiseaux") & Veronique Sanson, and Canadian Roch Voisine.
There's also Celine Dion (see The French Album).
Ah! I forgot the "incontournable" Jacques Brel!, Pascal Obispo, Johnny Hallyday, Francis Cabrel, Jean Jacques Goldman and Patricia Kaas.

You can also listen to Radiofrance.fr and check their music station or find a radio station of a French speaking country of your choice in www.radiolocator.com

Amitiés,

Y

If you're interested in Quebec French music... Jan 7, 2007

My favourite Quebec artist is Richard Séguin. His music is a mix of folk, blues, pop and rock. Two of my favourite albums are Journée d'Amérique and Aux Portes du Matin. You can find both of them on Amazon Canada.

And for music from France, there's Francis Cabrel. Sarbacane and Samedi Soir sur la Terre are two great, mellow albums.

J´ai trouvé un chanson de Benabar, ¨Le Diner¨..
Je suis en train de le ecouter maintenant...
Je l´aime!

merci

I haven´t had a chance to check out much of what folks have recommended (working right now), but giving the link made it to easy to pass up, and, THIS STUFF ROCKS!

Camille Jan 7, 2007

I am a huge fan of Camille - very mellow music, and a very haunting voice (www.camille-lefil.com)

Keren Ann is also good for that, and Matthieu Boogaerts - I think you would call them all alternative!

I find the i-tunes program really good for finding new music (or hunting down old favourites) - you can listen to little 30 second excerpts for free in their international shops, which is good - just like we used to with headphones in record stores, ahh, remember the good old days... he he! You change the country at the bottom - Then you can either hunt them down in stores, or buy/download them online. I'm sure you're probably aware of this program but anyway...

http://www.apple.com/itunes/store/

bonne chance!

melissa
