The holly and the mistletoe must be taken down and burnt, And the children got ready for school. There are enough Left-overs to do, warmed-up, for the rest of the week - Not that we have much appetite, having drunk such a lot, Stayed up so late, attempted - quite unsuccessfully - To love all of our relatives, and in general Grossly overestimated our powers. Once again As in previous years we have seen the actual Vision and failed To do more than entertain it as an agreeable Possibility (...) --W.H.Auden, For the Time Being

Nice poetry and hard reality together.

Christmas magic needs our help to happen, but most don\'t realize it. Christmas is a season of truth, and if your life doesn\'t stand up well in the harsh light of truth, you are going to get depressed. People spend the month of December huffing and puffing about cutting down their Christmas card list because it\'s getting just ridiculous, buying impersonal gifts by rote to give to people for whom they feel obligation rather than affection, and becoming outraged by Uncle Harry taking his teeth out at the dinner table and proclaiming that Hitler had some good ideas, even though Uncle Harry has done the same thing for the past twenty-five years. Then after it\'s over, they wonder why Rudolf has left nothing behind but a bit of reindeer poop in the rain gutters.
Commercials reinforce this depression. For a solid month, they drum into our heads that Christmas means a gorgeous home decorated with two thousand dollars worth of lights, loaded with pleasant, happy relatives gathered around a fireplace or seven-foot high Christmas tree, and dinner tables that look like a Norman Rockwell painting. After that unreality, they get down to brass tacks in January - use our product, and use it now, because you are too fat, too smoky, your career is going nowhere, and you don\'t know what you are doing, so call our psychic hotline.\" http://www.geocities.com/lettore59/winter.html

Surprisingly (and fortunately) I don\'t seem to suffer from this kind of deadly depression.
My Xmas card list is virtually non-existent (phoning friends and relatives is much more personal), I don\'t give a damn about stupid commercials on TV, we only have a tree because my wife likes one (if I were still living alone I wouldn\'t dream of having one in the place), I only buy a few presents and those that I do buy are firmly with the recipient in mind, my immediate relatives ... Just a thought for the New Year ...
