We see it every day in KudoZ, and that's what makes KudoZ so great - the pooling of knowledge.

PS that is *not* a quote, famous or otherwise!!

here are my preferred quotes... May 31, 2007

I have two quotes that I really like and in principle agree with, here they are:

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the silence of our friends.

Martin Luther King

Be wiser than other people if you can; but do not tell them so.

Lord Chersterfield

There are so many, but two immediately spring to mind:

George Orwell in Animal Farm: "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others".

Groucho Marx: "I wouldn't join any club that would have me as a member". (I assume the Groucho Club in London's Soho was named as a result of this quote).

Nice (but naughty off-topic, according to some!) topic.
Jenny.

Hitch always had a good line Jun 1, 2007

Hitchcock had some good lines - although maybe not as many as Sam Goldwyn.

"All actors are cattle" - which got him in a bit of trouble so:

"I never said all actors are cattle; what I said was all actors should be treated like cattle"

and

"There is nothing to winning, really. That is, if you happen to be blessed with a keen eye, an agile mind, and no scruples whatsoever" - Alfred Hitchcock

And of course Dylan Thomas, who stood up in his club and announced

"I have just had 18 double whiskeys in a row. I do believe that's a record"

He promptly passed out and was dead by the end of the day. It's certainly a way to go.

Oscar Wilde's quotes Jun 2, 2007

My favourite quotes are many of Oscar Wilde's quotes. here's a few:

In married life three is company and two none.

A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.

All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy. No man does. That's his.

I can resist everything but temptation.

I think it was O. Wilde who said: "The prime cause of divorce is marriage". Can anyone remember who said: "The tomb of love is marriage"?
Thank you.

Robert

As far as I know, Robert, it's a popular saying. Somebody of course must have started it (probably a wretched husband or wife) but it's just a proverb. Maybe somebody here will know better.

German speakers are the best when it comes to quotes Jun 2, 2007

"Whatever doesn't kill me makes me stronger" (by Nietzsche) was one of my favorites, until challenged by a cynical friend: "Whatever doesn't kill me may well leave me crippled!"

And I'm sure this one should have an English translation, but I'm also sure it wouldn't be as striking and precise (at least if *I* attempted to put it in English):
"Man ist nicht Mensch, weil man geboren ist, man muß Mensch werden" (by O. Kokoschka)

And by Brecht, more or less: "What's robbing a bank next to founding one?"

May I add two by Voltaire:

"Dans ce pays-ci [Angleterre] il est bon de tuer de temps en temps un amiral pour encourager les autres". (Candide)

and

"Si Dieu n'existait pas, il faudrait l'inventer". Épitres, xcvi.

Here's a good one for translators:

Task of a lifetime... Jun 2, 2007

... to quote all good ones. Here are some:

"Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken."
"These days man knows the price of everything, but the value of nothing." ~ Oscar Wilde

"Watch your thoughts, because your thoughts become your words.
Watch your words, because your words become your actions.
Watch you actions, because your actions become your habits.
Watch your habits, because your habits become your character
and watch your character because your character becomes your destiny."
~ The Talmud

"Men are simple things. They can survive a whole weekend with only three things: beer, boxer shorts and batteries for the remote control."

"Few are those who see with their own eyes and feel with their own hearts." ~ Albert Einstein

"If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking."

"Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It is already tomorrow in Australia.”

"Insanity doesn't run in my family. It gallops."~ Cary Grant

"Recollection is the only paradise from which we cannot be turned out. ~ Jean Paul

"In the long run the pessimist may be proved right, but the optimist has a better time on the trip." ~ Daniel L. Reardon

"It's not enough to rage against the lie. You've got to replace it with the truth." ~Bono

“If you take hyphens seriously, you will surely go mad” (Oxford University Press style manual)

"Sobald ein Optimist ein Licht erblickt, das es gar nicht gibt, findet sich ein Pessimist, der es wieder ausbläst." ~ Giovanni Guareschi

Wow, I think I like this thread...

I think Mark Twain was referring to the American spelling of words right? I simply love American spelling because it's like a mini-"revolution" in the English language.
