Thanks. Mar 29, 2003

I\'ll write in German, sorry.

Danke, jetzt weiß ich endlich den Ursprung dieses Zitats, das in leicht veränderter Form häufig G. B. Shaw zugeschrieben wird. Bei dieser Gelegenheit habe ich noch eine schöne Internetseite gefunden, auf der es mit genauer Quellenangabe vorkommt, die aber auch so sehenswert ist:

Words are flying... Mar 29, 2003

.. in all directions. You\'ve better keep your heads down!

Well, so apparently somebody produced a rather dubious attempt at saying something memorable on translation (adding a sexist twist to boot, presumably in order to make it humorous). And somebody else deemed it desirable to translate it into an impressive range of Italian dialects, and a few other languages as well, in order to throw it at an unsuspecting world.

It\'s heartening to know that people are working hard to enable the millions of web surfers who can only speak, for instance, Salento Greek - although not standard Greek, I\'m afraid - to access such pearls of wisdom. Apart from that, one rather wonders what the point of the whole exercise could possibly be.

Unless, of course, it was illustrating the original remark with a series of well-behaved, plain little wives.

If, on the other hand, it was meant as an example of what translation can do for you, well, how depressing.

Federica

bresciano and not bergamasco? that\'s sooooo humiliating for Bergamo, my hometown (just 50 km from Brescia). However, the two dialects are not so different. I\'ll post a translation in Bergomask as soon as I find one. bye
