Every time I start Word the toolbar changes back to the default outlay. What I need is the language selector, the index-function etc., other default functions I would be ready to put away with. But where can I change the settings so that they stay? Are they in Normal.dot? How to save Normal.dot from within Word 2002? Thanks for your wisdom! Heinrich
Normal.dot and Word 2003 | Oct 17, 2008 |
Hi Heinrich, You're right, you can use Normal.dot to save the appearance of Word, including the toolbars. I don't have Word 2002, but in Word 2003, you can go to File>Save as.. and in the Save as type field, select 'Document Template (*.dot)' and you'll be taken to the Templates folder automatically. Once you're there you can save the Normal template (I recommend you create a backup first--just in case) in that same folder. You can also create a new Template so you can use different... You can also create a new Template so you can use different configurations. If Word 2002 doesn't take you to the Templates folder, go to Options>File Locations (or its equivalent), so you can see where Normal.dot is stored. Then you just open it, modify the layout as you want, and save it. I hope that works, Claudia

I did that (saved a new empty document as Normal1.dot int the template folder). When I restart, the layout is the default, and even if I add the new Normal1.dot to the templates, nothing changes. Do I have to tick the box "update changes automatically"? I tried that, but it doesn't help either. When closing Word I am asked if I want to save the changes to Trados8.dot. Should I? Heinrich Pesch wrote: When closing Word I am asked if I want to save the changes to Trados8.dot. Should I? Yes. It is very possible that the changes you do to the toolbars affect the Trados template. Save it (you should be asked only once) and your toolbar should be as you wanted. We also change the order of the icons (even take out some buttons we don't use), add some styles (external, internal, normal text) as buttons... If you don't let Word save the Trados8.dot when you make a change, you need to repeat the change every time.

Customise Toolbars | Oct 18, 2008 |
In principle, one should be able to add icons to the predefined Word toolbars , but in practice it does not work very satisfactorily. I simply disable the predefined toolbars and define my own anew - it takes a little work to drag to your new toolbars icons of the predefined ones (obviously, it makes sense to choose only those you actually need there), but it is worth the effort. Technically, you go View-Toolbars-Customize, and click New on the Toolbars tab, give the new toolbar a name you like, and then fill it with icons - as I said, you can drag into it those you want to take over from the predefined ones, and I suppose you know how to add others - since they keep disappearing for you, you must have been able to put them in at the first place. After you have moved the icons from the predefined toolbars, you can hide them by deselecting their checkboxes on the above-mentioned Toolbars tab. HTH Antonin ▲ Collapse

All the time I had only added the new functions to the toolbar, but now I finally used the toolbar-adjust method. Thanks for your advice! Regards Heinrich ▲ Collapse
