There is a formula, I do not remember yet which one.

a simple way... Oct 7, 2004

...would be to write 55 characters and set the margins to that size as default.

There must be some way to do it through macros but I've no idea how!!

Grace.

In general you can't Oct 7, 2004

Vast majority of fonts in Windows are proportional, meaning 'm' takes more space than 'i', and wherever you can fit 55 i's, much less m's can be stuffed. You can with 'fixed-width' (monospaced) fonts: every character takes the same amount of space.

Why do you want to? Oct 7, 2004

If it's for invoicing, then it doesn't matter how many characters are actually in the lines themselves, you just count the total characters, divide by 55, and Bob's your proverbial....

One of the agencies I work for wants me to write the translations in lines of 55 spaces. Therefore, I need a lasting solution, not just for one text. Thanks again to all.

Are you sure you understood the agency correctly? Some agencies invoice based on a 55-character line. I, for example, usually invoice based on a 50-character line. When dealing with agencies, it's usually more a question of what constitutes a line than how many spaces an actual line in word has (the math was aptly demonstrated by Alison). Perhaps the agency didn't express themselves clearly enough.

Otherwise, use a monospaced font, adjust the margins and save an empty document as a template.
