Interesting - I thought it was rather the other way round, but I admit I don't have any reference for my point of view.
Do you have any for yours?

Sorry I can't suggest anything but AFAIK there is no conditional new line in Word.

In German Word 2000 I found something called "bedingter Nullbreite-Wechsel", which can be found via: Menü/Einfügen/Symbol/Sonderzeichen.
It is supposed to do exactly what is needed here, but surprisingly it does not work for me, at least in a table or regular line.

In Word 2000 you can scale the width of a space to 1%
so it seems to vanish..

Thanks to everyone for the input.

Turns out the "non-width optional break" is what I needed, which can be found in Symbols/Special characters and I think is what Harry_B meant.
