Hi,

Can anyone tell me how I can insert an optional line break in Word 2003?

Due to insufficient space, at the moment my text reads

xxx/yyy
yy

I want it to read

xxx/
yyyy

however, if more space is made available (by increasing the column size), it should read again xxx/yyyy on one line.

No, it ain´t Feb 26, 2005

Manual line break: CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER
In Search&replace put "^l" (without quoting marks), this represents line break.
To replace "/" by "/ with line breaks", place "/" in search field, and "/^l" in the replace with field. You can put also an additional space, where you need.

This should work.

Doesn't work Feb 26, 2005

Hi Jerzy,

As I'm working in a table, pressing Ctrl+Shift+ENTER inserts a line break between the row my cursor is in and the previous one.

Is there another way to do this? Jeff's suggestion doesn't work either I'm afraid.

Thanks for trying to help

Mandy

Just a regular space Feb 26, 2005

Just insert a regular space before the yyyy. If the column is not wide enough, this is where the line would be broken. However, the space will be visible if he column is wide enough. You can put a space on each side of the "/" for symmetry.

Ehm, what do you exactly want to do? Feb 26, 2005

If you have

xxxx/yyyyy

in one cell and wish to get

xxxx/
yyyy

in the same cell,

so go and replace "/" by "/^l", then you will get this.

It is quite normal, that if you insert a line break at your acutuall cursor position (prompt) your cursor will be moved a line down. When you type, each character moves the cursor to the right (at least when you type from left to right as we do in English), so what is your

You can simply move the cursor back with arrows or mouse or other commands.
I must admit I cannot understand your problem.

Needs a line break only if the column is too narrow Feb 26, 2005

Hello Jerzy,

I think Mandy needs the line to break if the column is not wide enough for the whole text, but for the text to stay on the same line otherwise.

I am not sure if there is a hidden character that allows for this, so just a regular space is what is needed like any normal paragraph, whether in a table or not.

what you need is an optional hyphen Feb 26, 2005

Hi Mandy,

To insert an optional hyphen click where you want to insert the optional hyphen and press CTRL+HYPHEN (i.e. Ctrl+ minus sign)

This is a hidden character so you won't see it if the phrase is not broken into two lines.
Ifyou want to make sure it's there, activate hidden text in Tools-View-Hidden Text (ticked).

Cheers,
Grace.

But then why the heck you dont make your column wide enough? Feb 26, 2005

Even if you afterwards need to get it back to the original width.
Just write down, how wide the column now is, then set it as wide as you need, and after you are finished set it back.
Or do you need a permanent solution?
Then use the solution from Graciela Carlyle.
Then replace "/" by "/^-".

Regards
Jerzy

Zero width space? Feb 26, 2005

Not quite sure how to insert it (I use OpenOffice rather than Word anyway), but seen it listed as:

U+200B

Only available on limited number of fonts, see:

www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/200b/fontsupport.htm

On OpenOffice (using the Gentium font, for example) go to:

Insert>Special Characters

On OpenOffice (using the Gentium font, for example) go to:

Insert>Special Characters

select 'Font' - Gentium and 'Subset' – General punctuation

following some modified Greek Omega characters and a couple of apostrophe-like characters, there is a number of blank squares. The last of these, just before the first of the hyphens/dashes, is the 'zero-width space' U+200B

I think you need one protected space and one simple space Feb 26, 2005

Protected spaces are Ctrl + Shift + Space (in my Word 2000)

I mean make it:
xxx / yyyy
xxx[protected space]/[simple space]yyyy

Portected space Feb 26, 2005

Harry_B wrote: I think you need one protected space and one simple space

It doesn't hurt, but Word will always try to fit as many words as possible into the line, so it will break on the last possible space anyway.

Why didn't I think of this? You are right, 2 simple spaces will solve the problem.
(Only one space would not look nice in one line: xxx/ yyy)

Uh, sorry, it's not Feb 27, 2005

At least in German, you're not supposed to put a space before/after the slash... Besides, a text flow like shown below isn't desireable either:
xxx
/ yyy
Sorry I can't suggest anything but AFAIK there is no conditional new line in Word.
