Hi everyone, I need a little help as I will admit to not being very technically savvy. I have Microsoft Office XP standard on my computer. A few days ago I decided I wanted to change my settings in Word so that the program would go straight to my translation files whenever I attempted to open a file. I went to Tools - Options - File Locations, but instead of changing the "Documents" path I changed the "Startup" path. Yes, big mistake I know, but as I said I am not very technica... I went to Tools - Options - File Locations, but instead of changing the "Documents" path I changed the "Startup" path. Yes, big mistake I know, but as I said I am not very technically savvy. The problem now is that I cannot restore my normal.dot template to what it was before. I have tried renaming it to normal2.dot (didn't help) and then back to normal.dot, but the Startup path is still the incorrect one. How can I correct this problem and restore the Startup path to what it was before? If I need to restore normal.dot, how do I do this? ▲ Collapse

Hi Jessica, Jessica Klingberg wrote: How can I correct this problem and restore the Startup path to what it was before? If I need to restore normal.dot, how do I do this? Just do it again (go to Tools - Options - File Locations) but put the correct path to the Startup folder. That should do it for you Regards, Grace

Hi Jessica, The default startup folder in Word XP is this (I have a German system, so things might differ slightly): c - Documents and Settings - (username) - Application Data - Microsoft - Word - StartUp HTH, Ralf

Should you have trouble with this, use the search function, integrated with windows. First, be sure, that system files are shown. Check this via Folder options in Control panel. If system files are not shown, no templates will be found. First search for "Normal.dot". When found, rename it to "normal.xyz". Then search for "*normal*.wbk". This should be the backup copy of your Normal.dot. When found, rename this to "Normal.dot". This should bring you back to the settings prior to last saving of your Normal.dot. Some hints for the future: keep a copy of working normal.dot somwhere else in safe location of your computer. When the settings of your Office are as you wish them to be, use the Microsoft Office Wizzard for Saving Own Settings form Microsoft Tools programm group to save you settings. It saves quite a lot of Office settings, so it is very usefull for restoring them or for moving own settings to another computer. Regards Jerzy

This was very useful information. I followed the path indicated by Ralf, and I was able to restore my Word settings to the original normal.dot. This "restore", however, has caused some problems with Trados...but I am going to that forum over there right now to post my next question.

to the above described path. Copy the original Trados template from Trados installation folder - usually c:\programms\Trados\T65_FL\TT\Templates This should usually help. Should you encounter further problems with your templates, you should generate a fully new "clean" Normal.dot, as possibly your old one is corrupted. Once again locate your Normal.dot and rename it to Normal.old.dot. Restart Word, it generates a new Normal.dot. Press ALT+F8 and use the function "... See more to the above described path. You can copy your Styles, AutoTextes and Macros between templates in this way. Close the Normal.dot template, which is by default the source template for the copying and open your Normal.old.dot instead. Copy what you need. In this way you can restore almost everything. You will however lose all modifications in Toolbars and Menus in Word. After you have restored all settings, save them using the Microsoft Wizzard. In this way you will allways be able to restore your working settings. Regards Jerzy ▲ Collapse
