I don't face this problem while making the PDF file of a Word file which is typed in a True Type Font. Could you suggest a way to get rid of this problem?

When you create the PDF file from the Word file, are you going into "Properties" and unclicking "Do not send fonts to 'Adobe PDF'"? This will embed the fonts. Your problem might not be that simple, but I hope this helps...!

It depends on which version of Word you are using... I had similar problem with MS Word 2000 but Word 2003 and Word XP don't have this problem. And I haven't found a way out of this... Hope this is of some help. Regards, Ritu

With OpenOffice.org 2.0.3 (http://www.openoffice.org) I've tried to input some devanagari characters and export to PDF using OOo's built-in feature — just clicked a button on OOo's toolbar. The characters in PDF look OK to my eye at least in FoxIt PDF Reader 1.3 (I'm not expert in devanagari and other Indic scripts though). So, quit that Microsoft crap and get a real good piece of software... Hi Langclinic, I just responded on the basis of the title of your post as your post was not visible earlier. Anyways, I always make PDF documents (and good quality ones) using Primo PDF. This is a freeware. And most of my work is in Hindi Unicode. Hope this is of some help. Regards, Ritu

I am sincerely indebted to you for your valuable suggestion. I download the software and was delighted to note that it had solved the problem. The reason for the problem might be that PDF 995 and Smart Converter PDF are not compatible or suitable for Hindi Unicode. I thank you again as you have helped me in solving an old probem. Not intended as publicity, but OpenOffice.org has a PDF creator embedded in their software, which is free and available under the GPL. Maybe they offer a solution to your problem, you could try and download it directly from openoffice.org. I think they have various continuous development teams, and I bet there's one on Hindi unicode text amongst them.
