Hello,

Word start-up fails and I get a message saying that Word can start in safe mode. I don't know if a file is missing or not.

I reinstalled it but the problem persists.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

You could try downloading patches and updates from office.microsoft.com to see if the problem can be solved, otherwise you might be dealing with a missing file (which can only happen if your CD-rom was damaged prior to installation, or you're trying to install an illegal download of the product).

If you are using an officially licensed copy of MS Office, try to contact MS support, they might have a solution to your problem.

if under WinXP, it should be under

c:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\

THat is, close all MS Office applications, delete the file, start Word.

When normal.dot is damaged, reinstallation of Office does not replace it, but if you delete it, the Office will re-create the standard one and put it where it belongs.

Sometimes you find 2 normal.dots when this failure occurs.

Deleting the template solved the problem Oct 7, 2006

Thank you all for your valuable input.

I followed Antonin's advice and the problem was solved when I deleted Word normal template.
