In Word:
Tools Personal Comands Format Numbering columns
Drag that icon to your bar, that's it!
Good luck!

Tnx Juan!!!
However, it's not that I didn't have the column icon in my bar...
What I need is to have a Word file numbered by column, instead of by page.
See what you get when you do: "View > Header/footer > footer # - automatic page numbering"?? ... I want to do that for columns ...
Is that possible in Word (I have the XP version)? How do publishers do to do this? TIA Marcela

I don't need to add columns, or to arrange the text in columns, I already have them, what I need is to have each column number shown automatically (as MSWords usually does with page numbers) within (or without, actually...) the footer of the page. Tnx again!! Marcela

It depends

If you have two columns on each page, you can derive the column number from the page number (like 2*j - 1, 2*j, where j is the page number) using the field { PAGE }
Should the number of columns per page vary, I do not know of a simple way, i.e., with a field (perhaps some VBA code would be able to do that?)
