Bug in Word? Accept Changes is "dead"

Hi all,

I'm running Word 2003 SP2 on Win XP.

Normally, I'm very familiar with the Track Changes tool in Word, and used to Accept All Changes when I don't want the client to see what has been going on behind the scenes.

But now I've encountered a document with changes, and suddenly the buttons in the Reviewing toolbar are dead.
I can't Accept Change (icon with the blue tick-off), even though the line with the change is highlighted/active.

I activate Track Changes, click Accept Change, but nothing happens.

Did I mysteriously change some setting in Word, or is this a known bug?!

/Jan

Seems to be a bug, connected with the last Trados version May 28, 2007

The same is happening to me.
Just close Word and restart it. After that the button should work again.
The same happens also with buttons for drawing pictures, from draw tool-bar.

Best
Jerzy

Is the document protected? May 28, 2007

The client may have activated the document protection feature (Tools – Protect document). In this case you can make tracked amendments, but you can’t accept any changes.
All the best,
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth, Jerzy,

The document was not protected, so I'm leaning towards the bug explanation.

And true enough, when I close Word and restart the program, suddenly the button works again!

I'm not happy that Word is being buggy, but at least I know who's to blame

Thanks a lot all,

Jan

Hi again,

We analyzed this further, and found out the reason for Word's erratic behavior.

The source document was created in Office 2007, and converted/re-saved to legacy .doc format.
Sometime during the creation, Track Changes was used, and later switched off.

The problem is that some changes from 2007 become hidden in the legacy .doc, since they are embedded as XML code. Word 2003 can't parse this code properly, and makes Trados crash!!!

We only found out after opening the .doc as an XML file, when suddenly the changes became visible. I now can accept all changes, close the XML, re-open and save as .doc.
And everything is working fine again!

/Jan
