Not difficult Dec 18, 2007

Hi Chunbiao,

I just received a .docx file today for the first time. I don't have Word 2007 but I do have Windows XP. It took a bit longer than usual for the document to open but once it was open, I went to 'File - save as' and then chose 'Word document' (not Word 2007). Then I deleted the original Word 2007 document from my folder. Try this and see if it works.

Converting to an earlier version of Word Dec 18, 2007

Hello Chunbiao,

If you download the free Compatability Pack from Microsoft at
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx
then that should solve the problem.

We are running Windows 2003 and can now open .docx documents. However, before downloading the pack you must make sure all your Microsoft updates are up-to-date otherwise it won't work.

Hope this helps. It seems people everywhere are experiencing the same problems.

Regards,
Caryn

Handling DOCX files in XP and earlier MS-Office environments Sep 9, 2008

I can confirm that it does help: the docx files are kept as such and can be worked-on using e.g. Windows 2003. I have precise details below.

Open a Word 2007 document in an earlier version of Word:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HA100444731033.aspx

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=941B3470-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

N.B.: use the latest version of Intenet Explorer for the downloads. That too can be downloaded. The MS download site doesn't like my Flock browser, for example.

I hope that gives full enough details.
