Pretty simple question: I have legal text, with lines numbered 1 - 44. How do I get numbers onto the pages with the least hassle?

to add line numbers in word Feb 11, 2008

hello:
I never had to do any legal papers, but according to the help in word this is the strategy to follow to set up your paperwork with lines after it has been typed.

Insert line numbers
Switch to print layout view.

Do one of the following:
To add line numbers to the entire document, click Select All on the Edit menu.

To add line numbers to part of a document, select the text you want to number.

To add line numbers to existing sections, click in a section or select multiple sections.
On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the Layout tab.

If you're adding line numbers to part of a document, click Selected text in the Apply to box.

Click Line Numbers.

Select the Add line numbering check box, and then select the options you want.

I hope this helps you

Watermark Feb 12, 2008

I frequently see American legal documents where the line spacing changes but the lines at the edge of the page don't. Historically, these documents were typed on "pleading paper", still sold in some stationery stores, with the line numbers pre-printed. I generally make a watermark with the numbers and set my left margin so that the numbers are legible.

That's what Redmond got ready for legal paperwork, I assume.

Good idea too - I'll see, what is closer to the original.

Thanks to both!
